Google Nest is testing a new HVAC alerts feature

Nest is testing a new thermostat feature that can help you look after your home. Your Nest thermostat can now help identify potential issues with your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. If a potential issue is detected, we’ll send you an alert via email.

If you are signed up to get the Nest Home Report, you’ll be automatically enrolled to get these new HVAC alert emails.

Sign up for the Nest Home Report and HVAC alerts

  1. Open the Nest app.
  2. Tap Settings Nest settings icon.
  3. Tap Notifications and then Nest Home Report
  4. Slide the slider on On

If you want the Home Report but not HVAC alerts, you can opt out of HVAC alerts by clicking the link at the end of the alert email.

How HVAC alerts work

Sometimes, your HVAC system shows warning signs that it’s having issues. For example, if it takes longer than normal to cool your home, there might be a problem with your cooling system (AC). If your Nest thermostat detects these unusual or unexpected patterns, we may send you an email alert.

The alert email tells you what your thermostat noticed and which system (heating or cooling) may have been affected.  You’ll also get a link to an optional survey to tell us more about what you experienced with your HVAC system, and what you did to resolve it.

Important: HVAC alerts are not meant to replace the diagnosis of a qualified HVAC professional. We are still testing this feature, and not all issues are being detected yet. You may see an issue with your HVAC system that we don't alert you to.

Get HVAC Pro assistance

When you get an HVAC alert email from Nest, you can choose what to do next. For example, you might first want to check for issues outside your HVAC system, like someone leaving the back door open while the heater is on.

If a Nest Pro installed your thermostat or serviced your system, and you want to hire them again, you can see if their contact information is recorded in your Nest app:

  1. Open the Nest app and tap the menu icon in the upper left corner.
  2. Select your home.
  3. Select Settings Nest settings icon in the upper right corner.
  4. Select Contacts or Home info.
  5. Select Nest Pro Installer.

In some regions, Nest can also help customers find and book an HVAC Pro.  In those areas, HVAC alert emails will include a link to a website where you can book a Pro through Handy.  Handy is a platform that connects qualified professionals (like HVAC Pros) with customers who need their services.

Pro booking through Handy will be available in select cities during the feature test.

How to book a Pro on Handy

You’re eligible to book a maintenance visit on Handy if you received an HVAC alert email from Nest and you live in a region that Handy supports.

  1. Open your alert email.
  2. Click the link to Handy’s website.
  3. Read the page “Book a Pro through Handy,” which tells you more about Handy and explains the consent terms and then select Book with Handy.
  4. At the Handy maintenance visit page, use the drop-down menu to select the service you want to schedule:
    • An urgent visit, for a Pro visit within two days
    • A tuneup visit, for a Pro visit after two days

What a Pro visit with Handy includes

Maintenance service with Handy includes a general inspection of either your heating or cooling system and your Nest thermostat by a trained HVAC professional.  The price of the maintenance visit does not include any additional work. If the Pro determines that your system requires additional work, they can provide you a description of the service and a quote with any further costs. You’ll be able to approve or decline any additional services directly with the Pro.
