Note: This article applies to LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ lights only.

For information on setting up and controlling lights from other makers, please see our smart device control page and our smart device setup page.

Google Nest and Google Home allow you to turn your LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ lights on and off, and control the color and brightness by using voice commands, the Google Home app, or a visual device like Google Nest displays. All LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ lights can be paired with Google Assistant-enabled speakers and smart displays. You can connect up to 6 LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ lights.

  2. Plug in and turn on your LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ light in the same room as your speaker or smart display.
  3. Open the Google Home appGoogle Home app. Make sure you have the most recent version.
  4. From Home tap Add and then Set up device and then Set up new devices in your home . (Don’t tap the link under Works with Google.)
  5. Choose a home to set up the light in and then tap Next.
  6. Your Google Home app will start scanning for nearby devices that are ready for setup.
  7. Tap Set up some smart lights.
  8. Turn on your smart light and then tap Next.
  9. Your Google Home app will scan again.
  10. Select the light you’d like to set up. Your light may blink when selected.
  11. Where is this device? Choose a room for your light.
    1. To create a custom room, tap Add custom room and then type in room name and then tap Next.
  12. Create a unique name. Type in the name for your light that you will use for voice commands. We recommend a name like “reading light” or “overhead light.” For best results, don’t include the room in the light’s name. (When you say the room name in a voice command, your speaker or display controls all the lights in the room.)
  13. Setting up your smart light. Your light may blink a few times.
  14. Your light is ready. Tap Done.
  15. Setup is successful. You can now control your lights with your speaker or display.

Control your lights

Basic voice commands

To do this: Say "Hey Google" or “Ok Google," then...
To turn a light on or off "Turn on or off <light name>"
Dim lights "Dim the desk light" or “Dim all the lights”
Brighten lights "Brighten the desk light"
Set a light brightness to a certain percentage "Set desk light to 50%" or “Set lights to 70%”
Dim/Brighten lights by a certain percentage “Dim/Brighten lamp by 50%" or “Dim/Brighten lights by 10%"
Turn on/off all lights “Turn on/off all of the lights”
Set lights to wake color "Set lights to bright white"
Set lights to everyday color "Set lights to soft white"
Set lights to sleep color "Set lights to candlelight"
Change the color temperature of lights "Change lights to 2700 kelvin"  (2000-7000 range)

Note: When your speaker or smart display and compatible lights are in the same room in the Google Home app (because you would assign your light a room during setup), your speaker or display will know your voice commands are for the lights in that room. For example, if your speaker or smart display and smart lights are in the living room, and you say “OK Google, turn off the lights,” then the living room lights will turn off.

Other ways to control your lights

  • You can turn your lights on and off from the Google Home app. You can also change the color temperature.
  • To control your lights and other smart devices with just one voice command, you can set a routine.

Set a Name for your light

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. In the Home tab, tap Settings.
  3. Choose the room your light is in.
  4. Select the light you want to name and then tap Name.
  5. Edit the device name and then tap Save.

Tip: Because you assigned your light to a room during setup, your speaker or display already knows the room it’s in. Your voice commands will be more clear if you use a contextual name like “overhead light” or “reading light” instead of a name like “kitchen light.”

Unlink your light(s) from your speaker or display

Note: You cannot unlink individual LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ lights. Removing one light through the “Unlink LEDVANCE/Sylvania” flow removes all LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ lights.

  1. Make sure your light(s) are powered ON.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. In the Home tab, tap Settings.
  4. Choose a room a LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ light is in.
  5. Select a LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ light.
  6. Tap Unlink LEDVANCE/Sylvania and then Unlink (This will remove all your LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ lights. We don’t currently support removing individual LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ lights.)

If the Google Home app is not finding your light during setup

  1. Turn the light off for 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
  2. Make sure you have the latest version of the Google Home app.
  3. Reboot your speaker or smart display.
  4. Force close the Google Home app.
  5. Factory reset your LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ lights
  6. Factory reset your speaker or smart display.
Note: If your lights don’t show up in either the Google Home app or the LEDVANCE/Sylvania app, they probably need to be factory reset.

If your light is not responding

  1. Make sure the outlet is receiving power. Check that your wall switch is on.
  2. Turn the light off and on. The light takes up to one minute after receiving power to reconnect to your speaker or smart display. Try your light and see if it works. If so, you’re done.
  3. Try the light in a different lamp/socket.
  4. If the above steps don’t work, you may need to factory reset your LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ light and set up the light again.

If you get the error message “Something went wrong”

  • The signal between your light and your speaker or smart display might not be strong enough. To increase the signal strength, move the light and your speaker or smart display closer to each other. They should be no more than 15 feet apart.
  • You might not be a member of the home that the light was set up in. Ask the person who created the home to add you as a member.
  • Other devices near your speaker or smart display or LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ lights might cause interference. If you have a nearby Wi-Fi router, cordless phone, microwave, or Bluetooth speaker, move it further away if you can.
  • You might have too many LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ lights. You can add up to 6 lights.

If you are still unable to resolve the issue, share feedback about Google Home.

Factory reset your LEDVANCE/Sylvania SMART+ lights

  1. Make sure all your lights are turned on.
  2. Factory reset your lights.
  3. Reboot the speaker or smart display you are using to set up your lights. Then attempt to re-setup your lights using the Google Home app.
