Nest thermostat stuck during startup

It’s normal for a Google Nest thermostat to take some time to start up after you reset or restart it. An animation appears on the screen to let you know it’s making progress. If this screen doesn’t go away after a minute or 2, or if it's frozen or stuck, check these steps to help you troubleshoot.

Step 1: Check your wires

Important: Turn off power to your system at the breaker box, fuse box or system switch. This helps prevent damage to your system and keeps you safe.
  1. Pull the thermostat display off the base.
  2. Check that all of the wires connected to your thermostat are fully inserted.
  3. The connector button should stay down on any connectors that have wires in them. If not, pull the wire out and check the tip.
  4. If the tip is corroded, bent or less than 1/3 inch of copper is exposed, straighten or re-strip the end of the wire.
  5. Press the connector button down and re-insert the wire. Push it in as far as it can go. Make sure the button stays down, which indicates that the wire is properly seated.

Step 2: Reseat the Nest thermostat display

Make sure the thermostat display is properly connected to its base.

  1. Pull the display off the base.
  2. Gently push the thermostat wires back into the wall. If they stick out, they can prevent the display from fully connecting to the base.
  3. Press the display back onto the base. Make sure it snaps into place.
Tip: If you used screws that weren’t included with your Nest thermostat to mount it to the wall, the display might not attach properly to the base.

Step 3: Restart your Nest thermostat

  • Check your Heat Link’s light: This lets you know if the Heat Link is connected to your Nest thermostat. For example, a steady green light means it’s working normally, while a steady yellow light means it’s been disconnected. Learn what your Heat Link lights mean.
  • Ensure your device has enough power: Your device will turn off its screen and disconnect from Wi-Fi if it can’t get enough power. Use your Nest thermostat’s USB port to quickly charge its battery. Learn how to use your Nest thermostat USB port.
