How to connect your camera to the Nest app and install it

Start here if you have a new Nest camera, or if you’ve removed your camera from the Nest app and want to add it back. Setup is simple - the app will take you through the steps. Be sure to add your camera to the app first, then install or mount it.

Before you begin

  • Connect your camera to the Nest app and test video streaming in your chosen location before you install or mount it. A poor Wi-Fi signal can affect the video.
  • Each Nest camera has different mounting and installation instructions, so you’ll need to select your model in the mounting section below.
  • For Nest Hello setup and installation, please visit how to install your Nest Hello video doorbell.

How to connect your camera to the app and Wi-Fi

1. Start with the Nest app

  • Turn on your phone’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
  • Make sure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network that you'll be connecting your camera to.
  • If you’re new to Nest
    1. Download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
    2. Open the app and create an account.
    3. Tap Add New Plus icon on the Nest app home screen.
  • If you already own a Nest product
    1. Tap Settings Nest settings iconin the top right corner of the app home screen.
    2. Select Add product Nest add product icon. .

2. Scan the QR code and pick a location name

The app will ask you to scan your camera’s QR code with your phone.

  • If your phone is having trouble scanning the code, try the tips in the Troubleshooting QR code scanning article.
  • You can also simply tap Continue without scanning and enter your camera’s serial number and entry key instead. These numbers are next to the QR code.

Important: Write down the serial number and entry key, and save this information with your important documents or use an online storage service like Google Drive. Having these numbers on-hand will be a big help when troubleshooting.

The app will then ask you to pick a location name from a list, or type in your own by selecting Custom at the bottom.

3. Plug in your camera and connect it to Wi-Fi

Plug your camera into a household power outlet with the included power cable and adapter. The camera’s light will pulse blue to let you know it’s getting power and is ready to be connected.

The app will help your camera automatically scan for nearby Wi-Fi networks. Select the network you want your camera to use. If the list doesn’t include your Wi-Fi network, if your camera can’t connect to it, or if you get an error code like NC022 or NC033, see the following articles for help.

Important: If you already have a Nest product in your home, the app may try to use it to connect your camera to Wi-Fi. If the app is having trouble connecting, try moving your camera closer to the assisting product.

4. Check your camera's video stream

Now that your camera is connected to Wi-Fi, the app will help you check that your camera can stream video. Make sure your camera is placed exactly where you want during the test.

  • If you see video, you’re ready to install or mount your camera.
  • If you don’t see video, your camera may be too far from your Wi-Fi network. Try moving it closer.
