Connect your camera to the Nest app

Start here if you have a new Nest camera, or if you removed your camera from the Nest app and want to add it back. FIrst, the Nest app takes you through the steps to set up your Nest camera. Then, you install or mount it to your preferred location.

For Nest Hello setup and installation, visit how to install your Nest Hello video doorbell.

Before you start

  • Connect your camera to the Nest app and test video streaming in your chosen location before you install or mount it. A poor Wi-Fi signal can affect the video.
  • Each Nest camera has different mounting and installation instructions. Select your model in the mounting section below.

Connect your camera to the app and Wi-Fi

1. Start with the Nest app

  • Turn on your phone's Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
  • Make sure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your camera.
  • If you're new to Nest:
    1. Download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
    2. Open the app and create an account.
    3. On the Nest app home screen, tap Add Plus icon.
  • If you already have a Nest account:
    1. Open the Nest app Nest app icon.
    2. In the top right corner of the app home screen, tap Settings Nest settings icon.
    3. Select Add product Nest add product icon. .

2. Scan the QR code and pick a location name

The app should ask you to scan your camera's QR code with your phone.

  • If your phone can't scan the code, try the tips in the Troubleshoot QR code scanning article.
  • You can also tap Continue without scanning and enter your camera's serial number and entry key instead. These numbers are next to the QR code.

Important: Write down the serial number and entry key, and save this information with your important documents or use an online storage service like Google Drive. You might need these numbers when you troubleshoot.

The app should then ask you to pick a location name from a list. To type in your own, select Custom at the bottom.

3. Plug in your camera and connect it to Wi-Fi

Plug your camera into a household wall outlet with the included power cable and adapter. The camera's light should pulse blue to let you know that it gets power and is ready to be connected.

The Nest app helps your camera to automatically scan for nearby Wi-Fi networks. Select the network you want your camera to use. If the list doesn't include your Wi-Fi network, your camera can’t connect to it, or you get an error code like NC022 or NC033, you can troubleshoot Wi-Fi connectivity issues for your camera.

My Wi-Fi network doesn't show up when I try to set up my camera

Important: If you already have a Nest product in your home, the Nest app may try to use it to connect your camera to Wi-Fi. If the app can't connect, move your camera closer to the product you want to connect to.

4. Check your camera's video stream

The app should help you check that your camera can stream video. Make sure your camera is placed exactly where you want during the test.

  • If the video appears, you're ready to install or mount your camera.
  • If the video doesn't appear, your camera may be too far from your Wi-Fi network. Move it closer.
