How to restart or factory reset your Nest camera or Nest Hello

Restarting your camera retains all your settings, so it is a useful first step if your camera is not working normally. A factory reset will remove all settings from your Nest camera. You might need to reset if you want to give your camera to someone else, if the app freezes during setup, or if it becomes unresponsive after you’ve installed it.

Important differences between restarting and factory resetting your camera

  • Restarting your camera is a useful first step if it ever becomes frozen, has trouble connecting to the internet, or is not working normally. Restarting will maintain all your settings: your camera should reconnect to Wi-Fi and you’ll be able to control it in the app.
  • Factory resetting your camera will erase all your camera’s settings and options. It will not automatically reconnect to Wi-Fi.

You can find more information on each of these options below.

Restarting

Instructions for restarting are different depending on which product you have.

Restarting any Nest Cam, Nest Cam IQ or Dropcam

  1. To restart the camera, disconnect it from power by unplugging the power adapter.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Plug the power adapter back into an outlet.

Your camera will restart. If this doesn't resolve the issue, see the details below to perform a factory reset.

Restarting Nest Hello video doorbell

  1. To restart your doorbell, disconnect it from the backplate
with the tool that was included in the box. You can also use a
    thumbtack or paper clip.

  2. Leave Hello connected to the wires.

  3. Insert the release tool, thumbtack or paper clip into the hole
near the top of Hello as pictured.

  4. Hold down until the light on Hello turns off (about 10
    seconds) then release.

Note: Make sure you do not hold down the doorbell button
on the front of Hello or it will be reset to factory defaults.

Nest Hello will restart and reconnect to Wi-Fi if it was
previously on a Wi-Fi network.

If these steps don’t resolve the problem, you may need to
perform a factory reset. See the instructions below.

 Factory resetting

Important things to know before factory resetting your camera

After you factory reset and remove your camera from the Nest app:

  • Your camera will forget your Wi-Fi network name and password.
  • Your camera will appear as Offline in the Nest app. You won’t be able to use it until you remove it from the app and then reconnect it to the app.
  • All camera settings you’ve customized in the app will revert to defaults after you remove your camera from the app and add it back.

Note: Because a factory reset permanently erases the items listed above, we don’t recommend doing it as a troubleshooting step until you’ve tried restarting your camera and other troubleshooting options.

If you’re getting rid of your camera or adding it to a new account:

  • If you have a Nest Aware subscription, you’ll need to cancel your subscription beforeperforming the factory reset. After you cancel, your camera’s entire video history, Activity Zones, and snapshots will be erased as soon as you disconnect your camera from the app. Once your video history and snapshots are deleted, they’re gone forever. They cannot be recovered. We do not keep backups.

Important: If you have any video footage that you want to preserve, create video clips or timelapses and download the files to your phone or computer for safekeeping before you perform the factory reset.

  4. You’ll get a confirmation email from Nest, letting you know that the camera has been removed from your account.
