Nest cameras and Nest doorbells, like most electronics, produce some heat when they're on. Cameras and doorbells work harder when they stream video and audio, send alerts, use Night Vision, or do other activities. All of these activities create additional heat. This extra heat is normal, and doesn't necessarily mean your Nest camera is overheating. You can expect your camera to be warm to touch.
Make sure you use your camera in the environment it was designed for.
- Nest Cam IQ Indoor, Nest Cam Indoor, Dropcam: 32°F to 104°F (0°C to 40°C)
- Nest Cam Outdoor, Nest Cam battery: -4°F to 104°F (-20°C to 40°C)
- Nest Cam IQ Outdoor: -40°F to 113°F (–40°C to 45°C)
- Nest Doorbell wired: 5°F to 104°F (-15°C to 40°C)
- Nest Doorbell battery: –4°F to 104°F (–20°C to 40°C)
Tips to keep your camera or doorbell cool
While your camera or doorbell are designed to effectively handle the expected heat during normal operations, there are a few things you can do to help keep it cool.
- Put your camera or doorbell in a well-ventilated space.
- If your camera is hidden, make sure air can flow around it.
- Don’t encase your camera or doorbell in a container that could cause overheating.
- Don't cover your camera or doorbell with cloth, molded silicone covers or skins, or any other materials.
- If you have an outdoor camera or doorbell, you can give it some shade to keep cool, especially in climates with a lot of warm and sunny weather. You can mount your camera or doorbell under an eave or overhang, or even install a small shade above it.
