How to zoom and enhance your camera’s video with the Nest app

When you’re watching live or recorded Google Nest camera video on your phone, you can take a closer peek at something by pinching and zooming with your fingers. Or, keep your camera zoomed in all the time by turning on Enhance.

Here are the differences between Zoom and Enhance, and how to use them.

Zoom

With zoom, you’re not changing the scene that your camera’s looking at. You’re just temporarily looking closer at part of the scene.

  • On the Nest app home screen, tap the camera you’d like to view.
  • Pinch two fingers on the scene to zoom in or out.
  • You can also tap the video twice to zoom in.
  • Drag one finger to pan around.

Tip: If you can’t zoom out, you may have turned on Enhance, described below. In order to zoom back out, you’ll need to turn off Enhance.

If you’re on a computer, hover your mouse over the video to display the zoom slider on the left side of the screen. Then move the slider up to zoom in, and click and drag your video to pan around.

Tips for zooming in and out

  • Try rotating your phone to landscape mode to have the video fill the entire screen. This helps make pinching and zooming easier to use. When you’re done, rotate your phone back to portrait mode to see the original view.
  • If you’re holding your phone in portrait mode, you can also also tap the down arrow Arrow pointing down below your video feed to have it fill the entire screen. Drag your finger left and right to see more of your camera’s view. When you’re done, tap the up arrow Arrow pointing up at the bottom of the screen to snap back to the original view.
  • Zooming in or out using any of the ways above won’t change the footage that’s uploaded to the Nest service, and it won’t change what other people who share access to your Nest home will see. Your camera will still stream its entire wide-angle view to the cloud and, if you have a Nest Aware subscription, it will record the entire view. However, if you use Enhance, described below, your camera will only stream the zoomed-in footage until you turn off Enhance.

Enhance

With Enhance, you can change the scene that your camera’s looking at. Enhance keeps your camera zoomed in all the time, even when you’re not watching video. Because your camera focuses its entire sensor on the are you’ve zoomed in on, Enhance can show more detail.

Here’s what happens when you turn on Enhance:

  • When you’re watching live video in the app, you’ll always see the zoomed-in view. The same goes for any other people who share access to your Nest home. If you want to zoom back out, you’ll need to turn off Enhance.
  • You won’t get alerts about motion that happens outside the zoomed-in area. This includes any Activity Zones you have set up, so after you turn on Enhance, you should manually adjust your zones to fit the new scene.
  • If you have a Nest Aware subscription, only the zoomed-in portion gets recorded.

How to stay zoomed in with the Enhance setting

  1. On the Nest app home screen, select your camera.
  2. Use two fingers to pinch and zoom to the portion of the scene where you want to keep your camera focused.
  3. Tap Enhance Nest Cam Enhance icon. If you don’t see this icon, tap the screen once to bring up the camera controls and then tap the icon.
  4. Wait a few seconds for your camera to adjust. When it’s done, the portion of the scene that you zoomed in on will get sharper.

How to turn off Enhance and zoom back out

  1. On the Nest app home screen, select your camera.
  2. Tap Cancel Enhance Nest cam unenhance icon. If you don’t see this icon, tap the screen once to bring up the camera controls and then tap the icon.
  3. Wait a few seconds for your camera to adjust. When it’s done adjusting, you’ll see the full scene in your camera’s view again.
