Learn about Off mode on the Nest thermostat

Off mode doesn’t turn off the power to your Nest thermostat. Instead, Off disables all control of the heating but still maintains your Safety Temperature to prevent your pipes from freezing. If you have a 3rd gen Nest Learning Thermostat, you’ll also still have control of your domestic hot water when the thermostat is off.

Off mode is useful during times when you know that
you’re not going to be using your heating system for an
extended period of time, like a long holiday. It’s similar to
Eco Temperature because your Nest thermostat will ignore
your heating schedule.

When set to Off:

  • Your thermostat will stay connected to the internet so that
    you’ll still be able to control it with the app and it can automatically
    download software updates.

  • Your thermostat will continue to record your Energy History. You’ll see an Off icon in the app when you check your history.
  • Your thermostat won’t turn on heating and won’t maintain your Eco Temperature.
  • Your thermostat will still use your Safety Temperature to protect your home in case of extreme cold temperatures and start heating automatically.
  • Note: The Nest thermostat has heating Safety Temperature enabled by default to help protect your home from getting too cold.
  • Your 3rd gen Nest Learning Thermostat can still control your hot water while your heating is disabled.

How to turn the thermostat Off

You should set your thermostat to Off if you want to help save energy when you'll be away for an extended period of time.

Temperature ranges for Safety Temperature and Eco Temperature 

Safety Temperature and Eco Temperature have different temperature ranges:

  • Set your Eco Temperature to help you save energy if you're away from home for a short time.
  • Set your Safety Temperature to help protect your home from getting cold enough to cause damage.

The table below shows the upper and lower temperature ranges for each mode:
