How to read your Nest thermostat’s Energy History

Your Nest thermostat’s Energy History shows you how often and for how long your system has run, so that you can make smart choices about your schedule and temperature preferences.

Your thermostat’s Energy History is a detailed summary that covers the last 10 days. You can view it on your thermostat or with the Nest app.

Note: To see Energy History, your thermostat must be connected to Wi-Fi and be added to the Nest app.

On your thermostat

You can find your Energy History by selecting Energy Thermostat history icon in the Nest thermostat's Quick View menu.

If you're using a Nest Thermostat E, your Energy History will be Settings Nest settings icon and then History.

Your Energy History at a glance

When you first select Energy, you'll see an orange
bar that represents how long your heating was on for
during the day. Turn the thermostat's ring to see the
Energy History for other days. You can look as far
back as 10 days ago.

As the Nest thermostat needs time to learn about
how you use your heating, it will usually take at least
a day after installation for information to appear.

Daily Energy History details

Press the thermostat's ring to see more details
about a particular day. Turn the ring to scroll down
and see more information. For instance, you can see
if your energy use was significantly higher or lower
than average over the last week. If it was, the
thermostat will also show you the main contributor:
your adjustments, Home/Away Assist, or the weather.

Press the thermostat ring to go back to the main Energy
History screen when you've finished, or hold down the ring to exit and return to the thermostat temperature screen.

Domestic hot water won't be shown in your Energy History

If you have a 3rd-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, it can also control your domestic hot water. However, you won't see the times when your domestic hot water was on and using energy in your Energy History. The Nest thermostat can still help you save though – you can create a personalised schedule to control exactly when your hot water is on, and Home/Away Assist will help by turning off your hot water when you're away for extended periods, such as when you're on holiday.

How OpenTherm can affect your Energy History

If you have a 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat installed with an OpenTherm-compatible boiler, when True Radiant is enabled, you might see long heating times in your Energy History and Home Report. As your 3rd gen Nest Learning Thermostat will tell your OpenTherm-compatible boiler how to modulate when True Radiant is enabled, your heating can run for long periods of time – but the heating water will be at a lower temperature to control your home's temperature more precisely. This type of heating control can be a more efficient way of keeping you comfortable.
