Learn about Nest thermostat temperature schedules and how to change them

Google Nest thermostats can help you save energy and keep you comfortable by creating a temperature schedule for you. You can make adjustments to any schedule your Nest thermostat makes for you, or if you prefer, you can create your own from scratch.

With Auto-Schedule, all Nest thermostats can learn about your home and your habits to automatically create a personalized schedule.

If you have a Nest Thermostat E, you can choose to use Auto-Schedule, or pick Basic Schedule, a pre-programmed schedule based on an average efficient schedule ready to use out of the box.

How Nest thermostats are different from programmable thermostats

Programmable thermostats will simply continue cycling through their schedule even if nobody’s home. Nest thermostats can prevent this waste by automatically detecting when everyone’s gone, using Home/Away Assist. When no one’s home, your Nest thermostat will set itself to your Eco Temperatures to help save energy.

Nest thermostats use their unique Nest Sense and Auto-Schedule features to create a dynamic, comfortable schedule that’s personalized for you and your home.

Learn about Auto-Schedule

All Nest thermostats have Auto-Schedule, and it’s turned on by default when you install your thermostat to help keep you comfortable and help save energy.

With Auto-Schedule, you don't have to manually program your thermostat to save energy. Simply change the temperature to get comfortable whenever you like with the Nest app or on the thermostat itself, and it will learn from your preferences. After a few days, it will program a schedule for you, based on what temperatures you prefer and when you want them.

Learn about the Nest Thermostat E's Basic Schedule

If you don’t want to wait for your Nest Thermostat E to learn from you, you can have it instantly create a basic schedule for you as soon as you’ve finished installing it.

The Basic Schedule is a pre-programmed schedule based on a national average efficient schedule that balances energy-savings and comfort.

During setup, your thermostat will ask if you’d like to use Auto-Schedule or Basic Schedule. Select the option for Basic Schedule, and your thermostat will set a pre-programmed temperature schedule for you. You can use the programmed Basic Schedule right away without needing to do anything else.

How to make changes to the Basic Schedule

If you ever want to change the temperature or the times in your thermostat’s Basic Schedule, you can easily change them with the Nest app or on your thermostat itself. See the section below for complete instructions.

How to switch to Auto-Schedule from a Basic Schedule

Selecting the Basic Schedule will turn off Auto-Schedule and learning. If you want your thermostat to use Auto-Schedule after you’ve selected the Basic Schedule, you can enable Auto-Schedule, and your thermostat will begin learning while using the Basic Schedule as a staring point. To turn on Auto-Schedule, use the Nest app or the thermostat itself to navigate to Settings Nest settings icon and then Nest Sense and then Auto-Schedule, then select Yes.

How to select Basic Schedule after you’ve already set up your Nest Thermostat E

If you selected Auto-Schedule during setup but want to try using the Basic Schedule, you can switch to the Basic Schedule by following these steps:

1. Disable Auto-Schedule on your thermostat.

2. Reset your thermostat’s schedule.

3. Select Basic Schedule and follow the instructions on your thermostat.

How to change your thermostat's temperature schedule

Nest Thermostats have a different schedule for each temperature mode of the thermostat. So if you have heating and cooling, your thermostat has one schedule for Heat, one for Cool, and another for Heat•Cool.

How to manually set your Nest thermostat to heating, cooling, Eco Temperatures or off

Nest thermostat schedules follow two simple rules:

  • Target temperatures can be set on the hour or at 15-minute intervals -- like at 7:00, 3:30, or 12:45.
  • Adjacent temperatures must be at least 60 minutes apart.

You can view and edit your current heating and cooling schedules on your Nest thermostat or with the Nest app.

How to turn off Auto-Schedule

In the first few days after you install it, your Nest thermostat will learn what temperatures you like and when you want them. It will automatically create a temperature schedule for you. If you don’t want to use this feature and program your own schedule, you can turn off Auto-Schedule on the thermostat. See the following article for full instructions:

How to use your Nest thermostat as a traditional programmable thermostat

Using a schedule with Nest Temperature Sensors

If you’re using Google Nest Temperature Sensors in your home, your thermostat will continue to follow its usual temperature schedule no matter which sensor is active. Your thermostat will always heat or cool to the scheduled temperature where the active sensor is located.

You can tell which sensor is active by tapping your thermostat on the Nest app home screen. The active sensor will have a white dot next to it.
