- Pathlight is a night light that switches on when you walk by your Google Nest Protect, and off after you've passed.
- It uses high-efficiency LED lights that use much less energy than typical incandescent bulbs, so it's easy on batteries and won't waste energy.
- It’s ideal for any area in your home where you’d like a bit of extra light.
When Pathlight switches on
- Pathlight is designed to switch on in dark rooms or hallways. If there's enough light detected, Pathlight usually won't turn on.
- Protect senses when you walk past and shines a soft white light to help you find your way in the dark. Ten seconds after you pass by, Pathlight shuts off.
- If you have a wired Nest Protect, you can set Pathlight to be always on, so it stays on as long as the room is dark.
- Pathlight only turns on after the room has been dark for a while, usually a few seconds. It works this way because it takes a while for your eyes to get accustomed to a darkened room.
- If Pathlight doesn't turn on, there may be too much light. This feature helps Nest Protect extend battery life. Low batteries in your Nest product causes it to not switch on as well.
Using Pathlight with pets
Pathlight is sensitive to you and your pets. Protect activity sensors recognize any movement in the room, including your pets’. You have the option to disable Pathlight with the Nest app or Home app anytime.
How Pathlight works in different Nest products
Pathlight has been optimized to preserve battery life. There's a slight difference in how it works, depending on the power source of your Nest Protect product.
Product | How it works |
Battery-powered Protect |
On: Pathlight turns on for about 5 seconds Off: Pathlight won't turn on. |
Wired Protect |
On: Pathlight turns on for about 10 Always on: If you choose "Always On", Off: Pathlight won't turn on. |
Change Nest Protect's Pathlight settings
Changes in brightness affect Nest Protect's battery life. Nest Protect's light brightness range ensures the best performance while preserving battery life. The default setting is bright enough to light your way in the dark without draining the batteries quickly.
Note: Nest Protect's long-life LEDs have been rated to last up to 7 years for 1st gen Nest Protect and 10 years for 2nd gen. Pathlight should work for as long as your Nest Protect does.
