Troubleshoot Farsight weather

Farsight is a feature that's exclusive to the 3rd gen Google Nest Learning Thermostat. When Farsight is enabled and set to show you the weather, your thermostat may show you a message that says “Can’t get the weather right now. nest.com/m2” or “Can’t display the weather because your thermostat is offline.” It might also show incorrect weather information. Find your issue below for some steps to take.

Follow these steps to help with the error "Can't get the weather right now. nest.com/m2":

1. Check the Nest service status

If the Nest service is down, it can affect features like Farsight weather that use online services.

You can check the service status at status.nest.com.

2. Check that your thermostat is online

Your thermostat can only get weather information when it’s connected to a Wi-Fi network. If your thermostat shows you a message saying “Can't get the weather right now. nest.com/m2” or “Can’t display the weather because your thermostat is offline,” your thermostat might be disconnected from Wi-Fi.

With the Nest app:
1. Open the Nest app.
2. Find your thermostat on the Nest app home screen.
3. If your thermostat icon is gray and says Offline underneath it, your thermostat is offline.

On the Nest Thermostat:
1. Press your thermostat’s ring to open the Quick View Menu.
2. Turn the ring to Settings .
3. If your thermostat is offline, an exclamation point icon Nest offline icon will appear instead of the normal settings icon.

3. Confirm your home's location

Your Nest Thermostat uses The Weather Channel to get local weather information. If your location is incorrect, your thermostat may have trouble giving you the correct weather information.

Important: Check your home location using both the Nest app and your thermostat to make sure they both have the correct information.

With the app:
1. On the Nest app home screen, tap Settings .
2. Select Home info.
3. Tap Address. You’ll find your home’s current address and its location on a map.
4. If the address is incorrect, tap on it to enter a new one. Then tap Next or Done.

Note: If you aren’t using your phone’s location to automatically switch your thermostat when you leave or come home, the map won’t appear.

5. On the next screen, confirm your home’s location on the map is right. If it’s not, drag on the map to fine tune it, then tap Done.

On the Nest Thermostat:
1. Press the ring to open the Quick View Menu.
2. Turn the ring to Settings  and press to select.
3. Turn the ring to find Location. You’ll see your address there.

  • If it isn’t right, press the ring to open location settings. Select Location on the next screen and press the ring. Follow the thermostat’s instructions to set your location information again.

4. Check your location information

Once you’ve confirmed that your home has the correct location in the Nest app and on your thermostat, check that The Weather Channel has the correct weather information for your home location.

Visit weather.com and search for weather in your area.

If no weather information is available for your home location or an incorrect weather appears, visit feedback.weather.com for support.

5. Check your home network settings

Reset your router and check that your home network settings are not blocking your Nest Thermostat from getting weather data.

Restart your modem or router:
1. Unplug your modem or router’s power cord.
2. Wait 30 seconds then plug it back in.
3. Your modem will start up automatically. It can take a few minutes for the modem to finish restarting.
4. After your modem has finished restarting, check that your thermostat and other devices can connect to the internet. If not, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for further help.

Make sure that your home network has settings that allow Nest devices to connect to the internet. Follow this link for a list of the recommended settings for networks:
