Your home automatically switches between Home and Away modes. This occurs when you set up Home/Away Assist in the Nest app or presence-based automations in the Google Home app. When you leave and come back, your home will switch modes and adjust the behaviour of your products. You can also manually put your home into Home or Away mode.
You shouldn't need to manually switch between Home and Away modes. This is done automatically by presence sensing. However, if you manually switch your home to Away mode, it's faster than if you wait for Nest to notice that you've left. A manual switch can also help troubleshoot when your Nest products fail to switch as expected. For instance, you can set Home mode manually so that you can stay warm while you troubleshoot a thermostat problem.
If you are at home and manually put your home into Away mode, it will remain in Home mode for about five minutes. This is to give you some time to leave. After five minutes, if any of your Nest products notice that you're at home, they'll automatically switch back to Home mode.
