How to talk to people with your Nest camera or Hello doorbell

Talk and Listen lets you talk to people with your camera even
when you're away from home. For instance, the Google Nest Cam
Outdoor on your front porch sends you a motion alert. You
open the Nest app to see who's there. It's a delivery person
with a package, so you tap the Talk button and tell them to
leave the package on the porch.

Talk and Listen works a bit differently depending on which camera you have. Select your camera below to see how this feature works and how to use it.

Nest Cam IQ Indoor and Outdoor, or Nest Hello

  • Talk and Listen on Google Nest IQ cameras and Google Nest Hello is like a video call: you can speak to the person in front of the camera and they can reply immediately without needing to pause for the audio to switch over.
  • Nest Cam IQ’s and Nest Hello’s noise suppression and echo cancellation help you clearly hear what's going on.

How to use Talk and Listen

  1. Open the Nest app.
  2. Choose the camera you want to speak through.
  3. Tap the Talk Talk icon button.
  4. The camera will chime on the other end if you have the Talk and Listen tone enabled letting the person in front of the camera know you're about to say something. Now you can start conversing.
  5. When you're done with your conversation tap the Talk Talk icon button to hang up. The camera will chime a second time on the other end if you have the Talk and Listen tone enabled letting, the other person know the conversation has concluded.

Note: Talk and Listen will work a little differently if you're using certain Android devices, or an older version of Android OS. You'll need to take turns talking and listening. See the section below about Nest Cam Indoor and Outdoor if you have one of the following devices: LG Nexus 4 G2 G3 or P1; Motorola Moto G; Samsung Galaxy S6; and some Xiaomi phones.

Nest Cam Indoor and Outdoor

Talk and Listen on Nest Cam Indoor and Outdoor works one way at a time. So you'll need to take turns talking and listening.

How to use Talk and Listen

To talk:

  1. Open the Nest app.
  2. Choose the camera you want to speak through.
  3. Tap the Talk Talk icon button. The button will change to say "Done" and start pulsing.
  4. The camera will chime on the other end if you have the Talk and Listen tone enabled. This lets the person near the camera know you're about to say something.
  5. Start speaking.

To listen:

  1. When you're ready to hear the other person's reply tap the Done button.  Now you can hear the other person's reply.
  2. The camera will chime a second time on the other end if you have the Talk and Listen tone enabled. This lets the person near the camera know it's their turn to speak.

Note: If you have a Google Nest Aware subscription, audio won't be recorded to Video History while the app's Talk button is pulsing. This is because the camera can't use the microphone and the speaker at the same time.
