You can remotely control smart devices when you set them up in the Google Home app.
Important: Before you continue, check for your device in Set up smart devices in the Google Home app. If there’s a linked article for the type of device you have, use the instructions in that article instead.

Step 1. Set up smart home devices
If you haven’t already done so, follow the steps provided by the device maker to set up your smart home devices.Step 2. Connect smart home devices in the Google Home app
- Open the Google Home app

- At the top left, tap Add
Set up device

- Select the device maker from the list.
- To complete the setup, follow the in-app steps.
Manage your smart home devices
You can choose names to call your smart home devices.
- Open the Google Home app
.
- Touch and hold your device's tile.
- At the top right, tap Settings
Name.
- Enter a name
tap Save.
Note: Nicknames are alternate ways to reference smart devices in the Google Home app. The nicknames you assign to smart devices in the Google Home app are not reflected in the device maker’s app.
To control your devices more easily, assign them to a room in a home. You can create a new home, create a new room, or add your devices to an existing room. You can add each device to one room only.
Note: All members of the home can control all devices in the home.
Add the device to a room in your current home
- Open the Google Home app

- Touch and hold the device's tile that you want to add to a room
tap Settings

Change a device’s room
- Open the Google Home app
.
- Touch and hold your device's tile.
- At the top right, tap Settings

tap Next.
Add the device to a new room in your current home
- Open the Google Home app
.
- Touch and hold the device's tile that you want to add to a room
tap Settings

scroll to the bottom and tap Add a custom room
enter the room name
tap Save.
Add the device to a room in a different home
- Open the Google Home app
.
- Touch and hold the device's tile that you want to add to a room
tap Settings

tap Next
choose a room
tap Next. Note: This action removes the device from the room in the first home. The device is still linked in the first home, but it should appear under "In your home" or “Local devices” instead of the room name.
Create and manage rooms
Create a new room
- Open the Google Home app
.
- Touch and hold your device's tile.
- Tap Settings
Room.
- Choose a suggested room name or scroll to the bottom and tap Add a custom room
enter the room name
tap Save.
Rename a room
- Open the Google Home app
.
- At the top, select the home with the room you want to rename.
- Touch and hold the name of the room you want to change.
- Tap Settings

enter a name
tap Save.
Delete a room
- Open the Google Home app
.
- At the top, select the home with the room you want to delete.
- Touch and hold the name of the room you want to delete.
- Tap Settings

Remove. Note: When you delete a room, any devices in the room are removed from the room. You can add them to a different room.
Check for new devices
With your voice
To do this: | Say "Hey Google" or "Ok Google," then: |
Sync all devices | "Sync my devices" |

Important:
- You must have already set up your devices in the partner app (Step 1 above).
- If you sync multiple devices at once, you may receive a timeout error.
With the Google Home app
- Open the Google Home app
.
- Under "In your home" or "Local devices," you can find all devices on the same network that aren’t part of a home or room.
- Follow the steps to set a nickname for these devices and add them to a room.
Note: You cannot unlink individual devices. When you remove one device through these steps, it removes all devices by that service.
When you unlink a device from a home:
- It disconnects the device for all members of the home.
- It unlinks the device from your Google Account.
- Make sure your devices are powered on.
- Open the Google Home app

- Touch and hold your device's tile.

Tap Settings

Control your smart home devices
After you connect your smart devices in the Google Home app, you can use the Google Home app to control them. If you have a Google Nest or Home speaker or display, you can also use voice commands to control your smart devices.
