Set up smart home devices using Google Home

You can control over 30,000 smart home devices including lights, switches, plugs, thermostats, and more using Google Home.

Supported smart home devices

Here's a list of supported smart home devices that work with the Google Assistant on Google Home.

Step 1: Set up smart home devices

  1. If you haven’t already, set up your Google Home device.
  2. If you haven’t already, set up your smart home devices by following the steps provided by the device maker.

Step 2: Connect smart home devices to your Google Home device

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home appGoogle Home app.
  2. On the Home tab, tap Add .
  3. Tap Set up device.
  4. Select Set up new devices or Have something already set up?
  5. If New Devices, select your location and tap Next Nest and then image.  Follow the steps to complete setup.
  6. If Works with Google, then select the manufacturer of the device from the list.
  7. Follow the steps to complete setup

Step 3: Set nicknames for devices

You can choose names to call your smart home devices.

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap a device in the home tab Nest and then image.  Settings Settings icon Nest and then image.  Name.

Note: Nicknames are alternate ways to reference smart devices in the Google Home app. Nicknames you've assigned to smart devices in the Google Home app are not reflected in the device maker’s app.

Step 4: Assign devices to a room

To control your devices more easily, assign them to a room in a home. You can create a new home, create a new room, or add your devices to an existing room.

Note: All members of the home can control all devices in the home.

Add to a room

Add the device to a room in your current home

Open the Google Home app Google Home app.

Tap the device you want to add to a room Nest and then image.  Settings Settings icon Nest and then image. Room Nest and then image. choose a room Nest and then image. SAVE

Add the device to a new room in your current home

Open the Google Home app Google Home app.

Tap the device you want to add to a room Nest and then image.  Settings Settings icon Nest and then image.  Room Nest and then image.  scroll to the bottom and tap Add a custom room Nest and then image.  enter the room name Nest and then image.  tap SAVE.

Add the device to a room in a different home

Open the Google Home app Google Home app.

Tap the device you want to add to a room Nest and then image.  Settings Settings icon Nest and then image. home Nest and then image. choose a home Nest and then image.  Next Nest and then image. choose a room Nest and then image. Next.

 

Check for new devices

Say "Hey Google" or "Ok Google," then...

"Sync my lights"

Important:

  • You must have already set up your devices in the partner app (Step 1 above).
  • If you're syncing multiple devices at once, you may receive a timeout error.

Using the Google Home app

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home app Google Home app .
  2. Scroll down to Other Cast devices where you’ll see all devices on the same network that aren’t linked to a home or room.
  3. Follow the steps to set a nickname for these devices and add them to a room.

Change a device’s room

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap on the device Nest and then image. SettingsSettings icon Nest and then image. Room Nest and then image. choose a room Nest and then image. Next.

Rename a room

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home app Google Home app .
  2. Tap the name of the room you want to change.
  3. Tap SettingsSettings iconNest and then image.  Name  Nest and then image. enter a name Nest and then image. save.

Delete a room

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home app Google Home app .
  2. Tap the name of the room you want to delete.
  3. Tap Settings Settings icon Nest and then image. Delete room Nest and then image. Remove
  4. Note: Any devices in the room will be removed from the room. You can add them to a different room.

Disconnect devices from Google Home

If you no longer want to control your smart home devices using your Assistant, you can disconnect your account.

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home app Google Home app .
  2.  From Home tap the device and then SettingsSettings and then Remove device and then Unlink.
