Play music on Bluetooth speakers or headphones

Stream music playing on your Google Nest or Google Home speaker or display to your favorite Bluetooth speakers or headphones.

Note: All media playback will play on the external speaker that’s paired with the Google Nest or Home device. Alarms, timers, and Google Assistant responses will play on your Google Nest or Home device.  

Step 1. Pair and connect a Bluetooth speaker & Google Nest or Home device

Complete these steps if it’s the first time you’re connecting your speaker to your Google Nest or Home device. 

  1. Turn on your Bluetooth speaker and make sure it’s in pairing mode. This is typically done by pressing the pairing button on your speaker, if possible. 
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Make sure you are in the right home. The name of the home is at the top of the screen. To change homes, tap the arrow next to the home name.
  4. Tap the Google Nest or Home device you would like to pair the Bluetooth speaker to.
  5. In the top right corner, tap Settings Settings and then Default music speaker
  6. Tap Pair Bluetooth speaker. Your Google Nest or Home device will then scan for Bluetooth devices.
  7. Tap the device once it appears on the screen. Your Bluetooth device will now pair with your Google Nest or Home device.
  8. Tap DONE.

Tips for pairing and connecting devices 

  • You can only have one connected speaker or headphone to play music through at a time.
  • Once you pair and connect your speaker to a Google Nest or Home device, it will auto-connect unless the speaker gets disconnected or turned off.
  • You can pair a Google Nest or Home device to multiple Bluetooth enabled speakers or headphones, but it will only connect to the most recently connected device.

Step 2. Play music

Once your Bluetooth speaker is paired and connected to your Google Nest or Home device, use basic and advanced music commands to listen to music and playlists.

Using audio groups

If you're using speaker groups to listen to media like music, podcasts, and audiobooks from multiple speakers at once, you can continue to do that with your Bluetooth speaker. Just add the Google Nest or Home device that's connected to the Bluetooth speaker to any speaker group. Here's how to create or add your speaker to an audio group.

Note: You may need to adjust for the playback delay that can happen when using a Bluetooth device. Here’s how to correct group playback delay.

Disconnect a speaker & Google Nest or Home device

You can disconnect a speaker from a Google Nest or Home device but leave it paired. 

Using the Google Home app

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Default music speaker.
  3. Tap the device you want to disconnect.
  4. The speaker will disconnect from your Home or Nest device, but it will still be paired.

Using your voice 

Say "Hey Google, disconnect Bluetooth."  

Note: Your speaker will stay connected to the Google Nest or Home device until you disconnect.

Reconnect a pre-paired speaker & Google Nest or Home device

Once you pair and connect your speaker to a Google Nest or Home device using the steps above, the Google Nest or Home device will automatically reconnect unless the speaker gets disconnected or turned off. 

If your speaker doesn't auto-connect, complete these steps. 

Using the Google Home app

  1. Turn on your Bluetooth speaker (or make sure it's in a state to accept connections) .
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Tap Default music speaker.
  4. Tap the device you want to reconnect.
  5. The speaker will reconnect to your Nest or Home device.

Using your voice 

  1. Make sure your Bluetooth speaker is on (or in a state to accept connections).
  2. Say “Hey Google, connect Bluetooth.” 

Unpair a speaker & Google Nest or Home device

This will remove your speaker from the paired device list. You'll need to pair and connect this speaker to use it again.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Find the device you want to unpair with Bluetooth.
  3. Tap the device.
  4. In the top right corner of the device card, tap the device card menu, tap Settings Settingsand then Paired Bluetooth devices. 
  5. Find the device you want to unpair.
  6. Tap X and then UNPAIR.

Fix a problem 

My  Bluetooth speaker is connected but audio isn't playing

If your speaker is fully paired and connected but you can't hear audio, try these steps: 

Step 1. Check the volume of your devices

  • Bluetooth speaker
  • Google Nest or Home device
  • By voice: Say "Hey Google, turn it up" to adjust the volume. 

Step 2. Reconnect your devices

  1. Unpair devices
  2. Pair and connect
