Play music on Bluetooth speakers or headphones

Stream music that plays on your Google Nest or Home speaker or display to your favorite Bluetooth speakers or headphones.

Note: All media playback will play on the external speaker that's paired with the Google Nest or Home device. Alarms, timers and Google Assistant's responses will play on your Google Nest or Home device.

Step 1. Pair and connect a Bluetooth speaker and Google Nest or Home device

Complete these steps if it's the first time you're connecting your speaker to your Google Nest or Home device.

  1. Turn on your Bluetooth speaker and make sure it's in pairing mode. Press the pairing button on your Bluetooth speaker, if possible.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Make sure you're in the right home. The name of the home is at the top of the screen. To change homes, tap the arrow next to the home name.
  4. Tap and hold your device's tile.
  5. At the top right, tap Settings and then Audio.
    • If this is your first time to use Bluetooth on this device, tap Paired Bluetooth devices and then Enable pairing mode and then go back to Audio.
  6. Tap Default music speaker and then Pair Bluetooth speaker. Your Google Nest or Home device will then scan for Bluetooth devices.
  7. Tap the Bluetooth device once it appears on the screen and then Done.
  8. Your Bluetooth device will now pair with your Google Nest or Home device.

Tips to pair and connect devices

  • You can only have one connected Bluetooth speaker or headphones to play music through at a time.
  • Once you pair and connect your Bluetooth speaker to a Google Nest or Home device, it will auto-connect unless the speaker gets disconnected or turned off.
  • You can pair a Google Nest or Home device to multiple Bluetooth enabled speakers or headphones, but it will only connect to the most recently connected device.
  • Check which mobile devices are connected to your Google Nest or Home device.

Step 2. Play music

Once your Bluetooth speaker is paired and connected to your Google Nest or Home device, use basic and advanced music commands to listen to music and playlists.

Use a speaker group

To play media on multiple speakers at the same time, you can create a speaker group. To include a Bluetooth speaker, add its paired Google Nest or Home device to the group.

Note: You may need to adjust for the playback delay that can happen when you use a Bluetooth device. Learn how to correct group playback delay.

Disconnect Bluetooth speaker and Google Nest or Home device

You can disconnect a Bluetooth speaker from a Google Nest or Home device but leave it paired.

Using the Google Home app

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Touch and hold the Nest or Home device that your Bluetooth device is paired with.
  3. Tap Settings and then Audio and then Default music speaker.
  4. Tap the device you want to disconnect.
  5. The Bluetooth speaker will disconnect from your Home or Nest device, but it will still be paired.

Using your voice

Say "Hey Google, disconnect Bluetooth."

Note: Your Bluetooth speaker will stay connected to the Google Nest or Home device until you disconnect.

Reconnect a Bluetooth speaker and Google Nest or Home device

Once you pair and connect your Bluetooth speaker to a Google Nest or Home device using the steps above, the Google Nest or Home device will automatically reconnect unless the Bluetooth speaker gets disconnected or turned off.

  1. Turn on your Bluetooth speaker (or make sure it's in a state to accept connections).
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Touch and hold the Google Nest or Home device you want to unpair.
  3. At the top right, tap Settings and then Audio and then Paired Bluetooth devices.
