Pair Google smart speakers for stereo sound

For an immersive music and media experience, you can connect 2 speakers to set up stereo sound. Stereo sound pairing is available on Google Nest Audio, Google Nest Mini (2nd gen), Google Home Max, Google Home Mini (1st gen), and Google Home. Both devices need to be the same model, such as 2 Nest Mini speakers or 2 Nest Audio speakers, and in the same room.

Set up the stereo pair

Step 1: Place the speakers in the best position in your room

For the best sound quality, place the 2 speakers:

• On top of a solid, level surface and away from the edge of the surface.
• At the same height as each other.

Step 2: Set up both Google smart speakers

Set up both Google smart speakers in the Google Home app. Once they're set up, they should appear in the app as separate devices.

Step 3: Pair the speakers

1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Google smart speaker. 

   • Learn how to check that your devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. 
   • Check which Google Account is linked to a speaker or display.

2. Open the Google Home app .
3. Tap Home   All devices , then touch and hold your device's tile.
4. Tap Settings Audio.
5. Tap Stereo pair Next.
6. Select 2 devices you'd like to pair, then tap Next.
   • The lights on one of the speakers should start to flash white.
7. Tap Left or Right to match the location the blinking speaker Next.
8. Under "Where is your pair?," choose a room for the stereo pair, then tap Next.
9. Create a name for your stereo pair.
10. Tap Next Done.

To change settings and control your stereo pair:

1. Open the Google Home app .
2. Tap Home  All devices  your stereo pair's tile.
3. Tap Settings .
4. Adjust the settings to your preference.

All media controls control the stereo pair, not individual speakers.

Talk to your voice assistant

Your voice assistant is available on Google smart speakers and displays. When 2 speakers are paired, your voice assistant functions and responds on both speakers at the same time.

Add your stereo pair to a speaker group

You can add a stereo pair to a speaker group. The stereo pair acts as a single device within that group.

Create and manage speaker groups in the Google Home app.

Unpair speakers

If you no longer want to use your speakers as a stereo pair, you can unpair them.

1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Google smart speaker. 

   • Learn how to check that your devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. 
   • Check which Google Account is linked to a speaker or display.

2. Open the Google Home app .
3. Tap Home   All devices , then touch and hold your stereo pair's tile.
4. Tap Settings Separate stereo pair Separate.

Relink your speakers

Important: After you unpair your speakers, you need to relink the device that was on the right side to your Google Account. To relink:

1. Open the Google Home app .
2. Tap Home   All devices , then touch and hold your device's tile.
3. Tap Settings Link account.

In All devices , your 2 speakers should have separate device tiles.

Troubleshoot offline speaker pair

If one of your speakers appear offline, you need to unpair and re-pair your speakers.
