Make Google-supported calls with your speaker or display

With Google-supported calling on Google Nest and Home speakers and displays, you can call friends, family and businesses using just your voice. This functionality is available in the US and Canada (excluding territories). Additional calling methods may also be available in your area. Learn more about making calls on speakers and displays.

Note: If you’ve linked an account through carrier calling, calls you make will be placed using carrier calling instead of Google-supported calling and will be charged according to your plan.

Important: Starting in December 2021, Google-supported phone calls from your speakers and Smart Displays can only be made to numbers in your Google Contacts. Learn more about this change.

Before you begin

What you need

• The latest versions of the Google Home app and the Google app .
• Google Nest or Home speaker or display firmware version 1.39.154941 or later. Check your firmware version. If your device is connected to the internet, it will automatically update to the latest version.
• To be located in the US or CA. Note: US territories are not currently supported.

Who you can call

• US or Canada phone numbers, if you're in the US or Canada

You can't make calls to emergency services.

Learn how phone calls will change in the US in December 2021

In December 2021, to make Google-supported phone calls from your Nest speaker or Smart Display, you’ll need to:

1. Set up Voice Match and turn on personal results for the Google Assistant-enabled devices you want to make calls from.
2. Have or add the number you want to call to Google Contacts.

After this change, if you try to call a number that’s not saved in Google Contacts, you’ll get the option to add it. If you add the number, Google Assistant will make the call. If you don’t add it, Google Assistant will cancel the call.

How much calls cost

Calls to US and CA numbers can be made at no additional cost.

If you linked your calling provider’s plan with carrier calling, you'll be charged at your service provider’s rates.

Set up Google-supported calling on your Nest speaker or display

In the US and CA, you can make Google-supported calls to numbers in your Google contacts. To make a call, say “Hey Google, call [contact name].” The following steps describe how to make calls to your contacts by name, fix common issues, and use optional features:

Turn on personal results to call contacts

Personal results allow you to call your Google contacts when you say their name, "Hey Google, call [contact name]." Learn more about personal results.

1. Open the Google Home app .
2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
3. Tap Settings   Recognition & sharing  Recognition & personalization.
4. Turn on Allow personal results.

Note: To make calls to your contacts, Web and app activity must also be turned on in your account.

Sync your contacts

To call contacts saved on your Android phone or tablet:

1. Open the Google Home app .
2. At the top right, tap your account.
3. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your Nest speaker or display. To switch accounts, tap another account or Add another account.
4. Tap Manage your Google account.
5. Scroll over and tap the People and sharing tab Contact info from your devices.
6. Turn on Save contacts from your signed-in devices.

If you have many contacts or new contacts, it can take a few minutes for them to sync. If your contacts don't sync, make sure that syncing contacts is turned on in your phone’s settings. Open your phone’s Settings . Tap Google Settings for Google apps  Google Contacts sync  under "Sync status," tap Manage settings  turn on Automatically sync.

Update your contacts and remove duplicates

Nest speakers or displays use your Google contacts to make calls. If your contacts' info isn’t complete or contains similar or duplicate names or numbers, your device might not be able to place calls to certain contacts.

To clean up your contacts:

1. Go to contacts.google.com.
2. Tap Search  or the search field, and enter the name of the contact you want to update.
3. Tap the contact you want to keep.
4. Under “Contact details,” verify that a phone number is present.
   • If needed, tap Edit to update your contact’s information Save.
5. Now, return to your contacts and find and tap the name of a duplicate contact.
6. Tap More Delete.

Tips:

• Make sure all your contacts’ names are unique. Include first and last names if available.
• Add a phone number, and if available, an email to each contact.
• If a contact appears under “Other contacts,” tap Add to contacts to include in “My contacts.”

Let multiple people make calls from the same device

With Voice Match enabled, additional members of your home can use their own contacts to make calls on your device. To let multiple people use their contacts from the same device, each person needs to set up Voice Match.

Important: If no one sets up Voice Match, everyone can use the contacts of the device’s owner if the owner has personal results turned on.

Household contacts

With household contacts set up, you can allow anyone with access to your Google Nest speakers or displays to call specific contacts that you choose. On Nest displays, this also provides easy touch access to make calls to those contacts.

Show your number when you make calls

When you make calls, the recipient may find “Unknown,” “Private,” or “Anonymous” on their caller ID. If you’d like the people you call to find your phone number instead, you can add your phone number.

Show your phone number

1. Open the Google Home app .
2. At the top right, tap your account.
3. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your Nest speaker or display. To switch accounts, tap another account or Add another account.
4. Tap Assistant Settings scroll down tap Communication Call Providers.
5. Under "Your own number," tap Edit Add or change phone number.
6. Enter your phone number, then tap Add.
7. You'll receive a text with a code. Enter the code, then tap Verify.
   • If you don't receive a code, wait 30 seconds, then tap Send new code.
8. Your phone number should show up under "Your own number." This can take up to 10 minutes to appear.

Hide your phone number

If you don't want the people you call to find your phone number, you can use an unlisted number.

1. Open the Google Home app .
2. At the top right, tap your account.
3. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your Nest speaker or display. To switch accounts, tap another account or Add another account.
4. Tap Assistant Settings scroll down tap Communication Call Providers.
5. Under "Your own number," tap Edit.
6. Tap Use unlisted number.

To control your call, use your voice or your screen.

Make a call

Say "Hey Google," then:

• "Call [contact name]."
• "Call [business name]."
• "What is the nearest [business]?" then "Hey Google, call them."
  • You will get a prompt to add the name and number to your Google contacts.
• "Call [phone number]."
• "Redial."

If you’ve set up household contacts on a Google Nest display, you can also choose a contact from your display. Just tap Call on the "Household contacts" card. The calling method used with household contacts depends on the contact selected.

Note: If Digital Wellbeing is enabled, this feature may be restricted or blocked by Downtime, Filters or Do not disturb.

End a call

Say "Hey Google," then:

• Google Nest Hub Max, Google Nest Hub: "End the call" or "hang up," or tap End call.
• Google Home, Google Home Max: "End the call" or "hang up," or tap the top to hang up.
• Google Nest Mini, Nest Wifi point, Google Nest Audio: "End the call" or "hang up," or tap the center to hang up.
• Google Home Mini: "End the call" or "hang up," or tap the side to hang up.

You can also say "Hey Google," then "stop," "disconnect" or "end call." If the recipient ends the call, you should get an end call tone.

Mute or unmute a call

• Say "Hey Google," "Mute call" or "Unmute call."
• Tap Mute .

View activity

Within My activity, you can get a voice recording of the query used to start the call, or queries used to interact with the Assistant such as “Hey Google, hang up.” Nothing else is recorded.
