Fix a Google smart speaker or display that plays incorrectly

If you're trying to play a specific song, playlist, artist or album from a particular music provider but your Google smart speaker or display plays the incorrect selection, try the following.

Initial checklist

  • Make sure the music provider you're trying to play music from is supported on speakers or displays in your location. Contact the partner to check their availability where you live, or view a list of compatible providers at Gemini for Home voice assistant supported services.
  • Make sure you’ve linked your preferred music provider in the Google Home app.
  • Important: You need the unlimited version of YouTube Music, Spotify, and Pandora to play specific songs. The base version will only play a radio station of the artist or song requested so you may not get the exact artist or song you requested.

General troubleshooting

  1. Confirm you're using a mobile device that has the same Google Account that is currently linked to your speaker or display.

  2. Confirm you're logged into your speaker or display with the correct Google Account.

    1. Open the Google Home app Google Home Application Icon.
    2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or Initial.
    3. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your speaker or display. To switch accounts, tap another account or Add another account.
  3. Confirm the default music provider is set up correctly in the Google Home app.
    1. Open the Google Home app Google Home Application Icon.
    2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or Initial.
    3. Tap Home settings settings icon Music.
    4. Select the default music provider you would like your voice assistant to use.
  4. Confirm the voice command you're using is supported in the chart below:
    • Tip: The supported music services listed below have the following limitations:
      • Spotify: You need to have a premium account to get the most out of your speaker or display. A subscription is required for most functionality.
      • YouTube Music: You need to purchase a YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium subscription to get the most out of your speaker or display. This subscription is required for most functionality. YouTube Music account must be from the same Google Account that is linked to your speaker or display.
      • Apple Music: You need to have an Apple Music subscription to play music from your speaker or display.
    • Important: Some voice commands below may not work on all music services.
