Get directions and commute information

With your Google Nest or Home speakers or displays, you can always get to work on time when you get information about your commute, traffic conditions, and your estimated time of arrival.

Step 1. Manage your commute settings

You must set the following locations in the Google Home app Google Home app to get relevant commute information:

  1. Set work and home location.
  2. Set an address for your speakers or displays.

Step 2. Choose your preferred way of getting around

Your Google Assistant will provide traffic and commute info for how you like to travel.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app .
  2. At the top right, tap your account.
  3. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your speaker. To switch accounts, tap another account or Add another account.
  4. Tap Assistant settings  Getting around.
  5. Choose a travel mode for getting to work.
  6. Choose a travel mode for getting around.

Step 3. Ask for directions and commute information

Here are some ways to talk with Google Assistant on your speaker or display about commute conditions, estimated time of arrival, and more:

To do this: Say "Hey Google," then: What your speaker or display will say or do:
Get commute conditions "How long is my commute?"

Estimated time to drive to work from your home address.

Traffic conditions for the fastest route.

Specify method "How long will it take to walk, train, bus or bike to the library?"

Estimated time to walk, train, bus or bike to a destination from your home address.

Traffic conditions if you drive.

Specify destination "How long will it take to get to Costco?"

Estimated time to drive to a destination from your home address.

Traffic conditions for the fastest route.

Specify source and destination "How long will it take to get from work to San Francisco International Airport?"

Estimated time to destination.

Important: You must be specific with your query to get the correct traffic information.

  • “Hey Google, how long is my commute?” - Your speaker or display will share traffic from your home address to your work location.

Troubleshooting

  1. Make sure you've set your home and work locations either in the Google Home app Google Home app or in Google Maps.
    Note: This can’t be done using your voice.
