Remember that Gemini isn’t a person

While your child can talk to Gemini for Home voice assistant like it’s a normal conversation, remind your child that it’s not a person. Help them understand that they’re talking to an app and not a friend who they can discuss personal problems or secrets with.

Response filtering

Some responses from Gemini for Home can be unsuitable for younger audiences. To limit who can access sensitive topics, you may choose a content filter for voice responses in your speakers and displays.

If your child under 18 has been Voice Matched and added to your home, they’ll always receive filtered responses, regardless of your filter selection.

Manage your child’s access to Gemini for Home voice assistant

Important: To manage your child’s account, you need to add them to your home. Go to Manage people and permissions in the Google Home app to guide your child’s access to activity history and settings and for more granular control refer to Set up Parental controls & Digital wellbeing on devices in your home.

Your child’s Google Account

Important: You can’t use Parental controls without Family Link.

To start off, Create a Google Account for your child.

Once you create a Google Account for your child under 13 (or the applicable age of consent) that is supervised by Family Link, add your child to your home. If you haven’t set up an account for your child yet, learn how to get started with the Family Link app.

Add your child to your Google Home app

  1. Open the Google Home app .
    1. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or Initial.
    2. Tap Switch home , then choose the home you want to switch to.
  2. Tap Add and then Home Member.
  3. Enter the name or email address of the person you want to invite to your home.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
    • For child accounts, they can only be a Member.
    • Customize your child’s access by turning Activity and/or Settings access on or off.
  5. Review what your child can access. Tap Invite.

Parental controls & Digital wellbeing

You’re in control of how your children access Gemini for Home with Parental controls and Digital wellbeing settings. Your child must be Voice Matched for Parental controls to work correctly. You can also personalize your child’s voice assistant experience through these settings.

  • Digital Wellbeing: Set filters and schedule downtime for your home. Downtime can also be used to block Gemini for Home access for your supervised children and guests.
  • Face Match: Teach your voice assistant to recognize your child’s face.
  • Voice Match: Teach your voice assistant to recognize your child’s voice. Voice Match is required for Parental controls you set for your child to work correctly.
  • Personal results: Get information and suggestions specific to your child.
