Important: This article only applies to Nest Thermostats and Nest Learning Thermostats (4th gen) that were professionally installed. Learn how to tell which Nest thermostat you have.
During professional installation, the expert installer configured your thermostat to work with your heating and cooling system. To finish setup, you need to add it to your Google Home app.
You must connect the thermostat to the Google Home app to use most of its features. Before you add it to the app, you’ll only be able to adjust the current setpoint and temperature mode on the thermostat.
Prepare for device set up
Before you start, make sure to:

Connect your phone to your Wi-Fi network.

Download the Google Home app

Sign in to the Google Home app with your existing Google Account or create one.
Add your thermostat to the Google Home app
- Open the Google Home app
.
- You may be prompted to create a new home if you don’t have one already.

At the top right, tap Add
Device
.
- Or, if a setup screen for your device appears, tap Set up or Next.
- If it’s not the correct device, tap Not now or Set up a different device.
- Or, if a setup screen for your device appears, tap Set up or Next.

Scan the QR code of your device. A check mark appears when the scan is complete.
- If you can’t scan the QR code:
- Tap Use setup code, then enter the setup code for your device.
Tip: The Google Home app provides additional details to help you locate and use your device setup code.
- Tap Add a different way, enter your device in the search bar, then select your device.
- Tap Use setup code, then enter the setup code for your device.
- If you can’t scan the QR code:
- Wait for your app to connect to the device. Once it’s finished, you’ll see a confirmation screen that says, “Connected.”
- When you reach the “Get started” screen, tap Already installed.
Tip: This step ensures that you don’t overwrite any of the important equipment settings your installer already configured for you. - Choose a Wi-Fi network to connect to.
- Tell the Google Home app where in the home the thermostat is located. This is used for device organization and voice commands.
- You’ll be prompted to set up a few key features. If you want, you can skip this step and configure them later.
- Set your temperature presets, which you can use any time.
- Create a schedule for these presets to activate in your home. Learn about Temperature schedules for the Nest thermostat.
- Set up presence-based automations to use Eco temperatures when the Away routine starts and return to your scheduled temperatures when the Home routine starts. Learn how to change presence-based automations settings.

- Follow the in-app steps to complete setup.
For Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) users only: You’ll be asked to configure the Nest Temperature Sensor included in the box, which can be done now or later. Learn how to set up the Nest Temperature Sensor.
