Troubleshoot when heating and cooling won't turn off

If your system continues to run, even if the Home app says the system is off, your reverse valve activation is likely set to seasonal instead of cyclical. Seasonal activation causes less wear on the equipment, but some heat pumps require cyclical activation. To change this setting:
Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) and Nest Thermostat
  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. Tap Home  and then Climate  and then your thermostat.
  3. Tap Settings settings icon and then Thermostat and then Heat pump.
  4. Change the activation to Cyclical.
  5. Test your heating and cooling again to make sure the issue is resolved.

Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen or earlier) and Thermostat E

  1. On your thermostat, go to Settings Nest settings icon.
  2. Select Equipment and then Continue and then Continue.
  3. Select Pro setup and then Continue. It may show other questions based on your system. Continue through the flow until the screen displays a wiring diagram.
  4. Select the Heat pump terminal.
  5. Change the Activate setting to Each cycle.
  6. Test your heating and cooling again.

Tip: If the reverse is true and your heat pump is set to Cyclical or Each cycle when it should be set to seasonal, you might:

  • Hear a loud whooshing sound at the end of the heating or cooling cycle
  • Feel a brief burst of cold air at the end of a heating cycle
  • Feel a brief burst of hot air at the end of a cooling cycle
  • If you experience any of these issues, use the instructions above to set your heat pump to Seasonal or Seasonally and check if it resolves the issue.
