Sleep Sensing FAQ

What can Nest Hub (2nd gen)’s Sleep Sensing do?

Sleep Sensing on the second-gen Nest Hub helps you sleep better. It tracks your sleep and detects your breathing and disturbances, like coughing or snoring. And it gives you personalized insights with tips to improve your sleep. So you wake up well rested and refreshed, and stay energized throughout the day.

How does Nest Hub (2nd gen) track my sleep?

Nest Hub (2nd gen)’s Motion Sense feature uses low-power radar to detect movement and breathing. Once your Nest Hub determines that you're in bed, it will track your sleep information, breathing, the time of day, and the light and temperature in the room. If you turn on sound event tracking, Nest Hub will use its microphones to detect sound events (like when you cough or snore) during sleep tracking. Sleep tracking still works if you don’t turn on sound event tracking.

Do I need a Sleep Sensing subscription?

When you purchase Nest Hub (2nd gen), it will include a preview of Sleep Sensing. You can use it until next year with no additional cost.

Can Sleep Sensing track more than one person’s sleep?

Nest Hub (2nd gen)’s Sleep Sensing feature is only able to track a single person’s sleep and does not currently support multiple users.

Will Sleep Sensing work if there is more than one person or pet sleeping on the bed?

The Sleep Calibration step on your Nest Hub (2nd gen) helps detect how far away you are when you’re sleeping. During sleep tracking, Nest Hub pays attention to anything within the range it set during calibration. When you calibrate your device, make sure that you’re the only person in the room, and your pets aren’t around. That way, your Nest Hub (2nd gen) can better differentiate between you and other people or pets based on your proximity to it.

It’s important to know that the Sleep Sensing algorithm doesn’t identify you uniquely, so if another person or even a pet sleeps in the same spot or between you and your Nest Hub, this will affect your data.

What does the Motion Sense technology see?

Your Nest Hub (2nd gen) uses Motion Sense’s low-power radar to detect movement and breathing. No distinguishable images of your body or face are generated or used for Sleep Sensing with Motion Sense.

What sources are being used for the personalized sleep tips?

Your Nest Hub (2nd gen) will feature tips and informational content that was produced in partnership with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine to help you better understand the science behind your sleep guidelines.

How long does it take for the device to share personalized tips?

Your Nest Hub (2nd gen) will give you a detailed summary of your sleep every night and will start giving you personalized tips after about a week. For example, if you’re having trouble waking up at a consistent time, you might receive a tip to try exercising upon waking to help your body adjust to your desired schedule.

How are you using my sleep data?

Google’s Privacy Policy applies to all our connected home devices and services, and you can learn more about specific data usage by visiting our FAQs on privacy: Google Nest. Your sleep data is not used for ad personalization, and you can review and delete it at any time.

Does this device diagnose COVID-19 or sleep apnea?

No. Sleep Sensing is not intended to diagnose, cure, mitigate, prevent or treat any disease or condition. Consult your healthcare professional for questions about your health.

Many people are concerned about screen time and digital wellbeing. Isn’t putting another screen in my bedroom bad for me?

Dimming or removing light in the late evening can support better sleep, and bright light in the morning has been shown to energize you. The Nest Hub (2nd Gen) has features like Ambient EQ and Dark theme that automatically tailor the screen brightness to the room, so the screen doesn’t disrupt the ambiance or your sleep. Night mode and the bedtime Routine can help you sleep undisturbed, while an alarm can work with your smart lights to help you gently wake up.

With your sleep summaries and suggestions by the bedside, you have a centralized place to better understand your sleep.

Can I set routines based on if I’m sleeping?

Nest Hub (2nd gen) doesn’t support starting a Routine based on your sleep, but you can customize the Bedtime Routine to help with your sleep needs.

Will there be integration with Fitbit?

Google is learning and innovating on this new technology, and also exploring how Sleep Sensing can become a part of the Fitbit and Fitbit Premium experiences. Google and Fitbit will keep you updated on any future plans related to Sleep Sensing. Learn more at g.co/sleepsensing/preview.
