Nest Thermostat unable to update software

Nest thermostats update automatically when connected to the Internet through Wi-Fi. If your Google Nest thermostat stalls, freezes or gets stuck for more than 15 minutes during a software update, restart it to finish the update. The Nest Thermostat typically shows 'g.co/nest/m21' if there is another software update problem.

Depending on your model, you can confirm the software version in the Google Home app, in the Nest app or on the thermostat itself.

Important: Some software updates may take a few weeks to make it to all Nest thermostats that are connected to Wi-Fi.

Nest Thermostat software update error messages

If your Nest Thermostat is unable to update its software, it should show one of the following messages:

  • 'Unable to check'
  • 'No network'
  • 'Add account to check for updates'

These errors only apply to the Nest Thermostat. Nest thermostat software history contains notes about the latest version of thermostat software. For more details, go to How to tell which Nest thermostat you have and Nest thermostat software update history.
