Set up smart home devices using Google Home

You can control over 10,000 smart home devices including lights, switches, plugs, thermostats, and more using Google Home.

Supported smart home devices

Here's a list of supported smart home devices that work with the Google Assistant on Google Home.

Step 1: Set up smart home devices

If you haven’t already, set up your smart home devices by following the steps provided by the device maker.

Step 2: Connect smart home devices to your Google Home device

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home appGoogle Home app.
  2. On the Home tab, tap the “Add” quick action .
  3. Tap Set up device
  4. Tap Have something already set up?
  5. Select the manufacturer of the device
  6. Follow the steps to complete setup

Note: There isn't a limit to the number of devices you can connect to Google Home.

Step 3: Set nicknames for devices

You can choose names to call your smart home devices.

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap a device in the home tab
  3. Tap settings Settings icon
  4. Tap name

Note: Nicknames are alternate ways to reference lights in the Google Home app. Nicknames you've assigned to lights in the Google Home app are not reflected in the partner app.

Step 4: Assign devices to a room

To control your devices more easily, assign them to a room.

Add to a room

Add the device to a room in your current home

Open the Google Home app Google Home app.

Tap the device you want to add to a room  Settings Settings icon Room choose a room Next

Add the device to a room in a different home

Open the Google Home app Google Home app.

Tap the device you want to add to a room  Settings Settings icon home choose a home  Next choose a room Next.

 

Check for new devices

Say "Hey Google" or "Ok Google," then...

Sync all devices

"Sync my devices"

Sync a device type

"Sync my lights"

Important:

  • You must have already set up your devices in the partner app (Step 1 above).
  • If you're syncing multiple devices at once, you may receive a timeout error.

Using the Google Home app

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home app Google Home app .
  2. Scroll down to Other Cast devices where you’ll see all devices on the same network that aren’t linked to a home or room.
  3. Follow the steps to set a nickname for these devices and add them to a room.

Change a device’s room

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap on the device SettingsSettings icon Room choose a room Next.

Rename a room

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home app Google Home app .
  2. Tap the name of the room you want to change.
  3. Tap SettingsSettings icon Name   enter a name save.

Delete a room

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home app Google Home app .
  2. Tap the name of the room you want to change.
  3. Tap Settings Settings icon Delete room Remove
  4. Note: Any devices in the room will be removed from the room. You can add them to a different room.

Disconnect devices from Google Home

If you no longer want to control your smart home devices using your Assistant, you can disconnect your account.

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home app Google Home app .
  2.  From Home tap the device and then SettingsSettings and then Remove device and then Unlink.
