Have a conversation with your speaker or display

With Continued Conversation, you can have a back-and-forth dialogue with your Google Nest or Home speakers and displays without saying “Hey Google” before each question.

Note: Your Assistant language must be set to English. Use Android Google Search App (AGSA) 8.7 or later to access Continued Conversation within Assistant Settings on an Android device.

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2.  Tap Settings  and then  Google Assistant and then Manage all Assistant settings and then Continued Conversation .
  3. Turn on Continued Conversation.

Tip: When you turn on Continued Conversation, it's on for all your speakers and displays.
To check which devices this setting applies to:

  •  Tap Settings  and then  Google Assistant and then Manage all Assistant settings and then Continued Conversation .

Note: If you’re not the primary account holder, you'll need to be Voice Matched to use Continued Conversation.

How it works

Say “Hey Google” and ask your question or give a command. When the Assistant responds, it listens for about 8 seconds for your follow-up questions. Assistant is listening if the lights on your speaker are moving or the white circle in the top left corner of your display screen is visible. If the primary account holder has turned on Continued Conversation, it’ll work for all users. If not, if you turn it on, you’ll need to be Voice Matched.

Example: Say “Hey Google, what’s the weather like today?” After your Assistant shares today’s weather, you can ask “And what about tomorrow?” and get the forecast.

End the conversation

If you’re done with your conversation with your Assistant, you can stop to talk or start to talk to someone else. Your Assistant will know your conversation is over and the microphone will close.

You can also immediately end the conversation when you say any of the following commands:

  • "Thank you"
  • "Thanks, Google"
  • "I'm done"

Features you can’t use with Continued Conversation

You can’t have a conversation with your Assistant:

  • During a phone call
  • When alarms or timers are going off
