Pick a preferred TV or speaker for video and audio playback

You can choose a media playback device that will always play your video and audio without having to include the device's name in your voice command.

Why pick a preferred TV or speaker?

By default, If you have more than a one linked TV (using Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra, or a Chromecast built-in TV), you need to explicitly say the name of the TV/Chromecast to be used for playback. (i.e. Living Room TV) to play YouTube videos and TV shows and movies on Google Home. 

Now you can choose a preferred device for all video voice commands you use with Google Home. These voice commands will play on your preferred device without having to specify its name. 

If you want to play media on a device that's not your preferred TV,  you can still explicitly ask to play media on that device (i.e. on <xx TV>).

AUDIO: Benefits of picking a preferred speaker

By default, when you ask Google Home to play audio and music, it will play music on its built-in speaker. If you use a premium sound Chromecast built-in audio devices or audio cast groups, you need to explicitly say the name of the speaker/group to be used for playback. (i.e. ‘Bedroom speakers’, ‘Home Group’). 

Now you can choose a preferred device for all audio voice commands you use with Google Home. These voice commands will play on your preferred speaker/group without having to specify its name. 

If you want to play media on a device that's not your preferred speaker,  you can still explicitly ask to play media on that device (i.e. on <xx speaker>.

Set your preferred TV or speaker

Step 1. Link your TVs and speakers

Link TVs to Google Home
  1. Set up Google Home.
  2. Open the Google Home app .
  3. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  4. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home. To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name.
  5. Make sure your Chromecast and Chromecast built-in TVs are set up and on the same Wi-Fi network as Google Home.
  6. Tap More settings.
  7. Under "Services," tap TVs and Speakers . You'll see a list of all your linked devices.
  8. To link a new Chromecast or TV with Chromecast built-in, tap the plus sign in the bottom right corner of the screen.  
  9. The Google Home app will search for voice-supported TVs on the same Wi-Fi network as your Google Home. Note: You may see a list of devices that aren’t voice-supported. These can’t currently be linked to your Google Home, but they'll be available soon.
  10. To add a device, tap the checkbox next to the device name. You can select multiple devices. Tap Add
  11. You'll see all your devices within the "TVs and speakers" section of the Google Home app.  .
  12. Note: If you receive an "Error when linking device" error message, you must Factory Data Reset (FDR) your Chromecast device.

Step 2. Set your preferred media playback device 

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top right corner of the Home screen, tap Devices  to see available Google Home devices. 
  3. Scroll to find the device card for the device you want to adjust. 
  4. In the top right corner of the device card, tap the device card menu More menu iconand thenSettings.
  5. Under "Device settings", tap Media Playback.
  6. Under "Listen on" is a list of TVs and speakers linked to your Google Account. Tap your preferred TV or speaker. 
  7. Under "Watch on" is a list of TVs linked to your Google Account. Tap your preferred TV. 

To reset your preferred device, tap More menu iconand then Reset to defaults. 

Tips and tricks 

  1. To play media on your Google Home device and not your preferred TV or speaker, say "Ok Google, play <media> on <Google Home device name>.
  2. Unsupported features
    1. Podcasts will play locally on Google Home, not on a TV or speaker.
    2. News won't play on TV devices, so if you set a TV as your preferred "Listen on" device, Google Home will play it locally instead.
  3. You must be linked to the Google Home device to be able to set its preferred TV or speakers
  4. You can set as preferred audio or video output any device/group that's inked to any of the users linked to the specific Google Home.
  5. When the preferred device is not available (offline, powered off) you'll hear a message letting you know it's unavailable. 
  6. When you Factory Data Reset your Google Home device or your preferred TV / Speaker you will need to reapply the setting.
