Smart home control upgrade for Google Home

We’re rolling out a software update to help you continue to use smart home devices and try new features on Google Home.

To check if your Google Home requires this update, say a command like “Ok Google, turn on the lights” and you may receive a message to upgrade. You can also check the Google Home app or Google app using the steps below.

Step 1. Unlink devices 

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home. To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name.
  4. Tap More settings and then Home control.
  5. In the "Devices" tab, tap Add   .
  6. Tap a device labeled "Upgrade!" 
    1. Note: If you don’t see any devices with the word “update” next to them, you can continue to use your Assistant without completing these steps. 
  7. In the top right corner of the screen, tap More and then Manage Accounts.
  8. Tap on the account you’d like to unlink. 
  9. Tap Unlink account and then Unlink. 
  10. At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see confirmation of the unlinked account. 

Step 2. Connect devices to Google Home

  1. In the "Devices" tab, tap Add   .
  2. Tap the device you want to connect, then follow the steps.
  3. When the pairing is complete, tap Done.

Step 3. Rename or set a nickname for devices

You can name a device the same name you assigned it in the partner app or create a nickname in the Google Home app.

  1. In the "Devices" tab, you'll see devices connected to Google Home.
  2. Tap the device you want to set a nickname for.
  3. Tap Set a nickname and then enter a nickname and then OK.
  4. To see your device’s new nickname, tap Device details.

Note: Nicknames are alternate ways to reference devices in the Google Home app. Nicknames you've assigned to devices in the Google Home app are not reflected in the partner app.

Step 4. Assign devices to a room

To control your devices more easily, assign them to a room. 


Add a room 
  1. In the "Rooms" tab, you'll see devices connected to Google Home.
  2. Tap Add .
  3. To choose a room, tap the radio button to the left of the room name. Tap Next. 
    1. To add a room that’s not listed, scroll down and tap + CUSTOM ROOM and then enter a room name and then OK.  
  4. To add a device to that room, tap the box next to the device name and then Done. 

Note: You can add each device to only one room.

Add devices to a room
  1. In the "Rooms" tap room you want to add devices to.
  2. Under "Add devices," choose the devices you want to add, or tap Select all to move all devices into that room. 
  3. Tap Done. 
Check for new devices 

You can check for new devices that haven’t been assigned to a room. 

  1. In the "Devices" tab, you'll see new devices as "Unassigned."
  2. Follow the steps to set a nickname for these devices and add them to a room.
Change a device's room 
  1. In the "Rooms" tab, tap the room you want to move a device from.
  2. Next to the device you want to move, tap Move.​
  3. Choose a room you’d like to move it to. 
    1. To add a room that’s not listed, scroll down and tap + CUSTOM ROOM and then type a room name and then OK.  
  4. Tap Done
Rename a room 
  1. In the "Rooms" tab, tap the room you want to rename.
  2. Tap the room name again, then enter a new name.
  3. Tap OK and then Done.
Delete a room 

Step 1: Move device's out of the room

 A room has to be empty before deleting the room. See the above steps to change a device's room.

Step 2: Delete the room

  1. In the "Rooms" tab, tap the room you want to delete.
  2. At the top, tap Delete Trashand then OK.
