Google Home & phone respond to "Ok Google"

If you’re near your Google Home device and phone, only Google Home should respond to "Ok Google." If your phone also responds, here’s how you can try fixing the issue. 

Step 1: Update your Google app version

  1. On your phone, open the Google app Google .
  2. At the top-left of the Home screen, tap Menu Menu and then Settings and then About.
  3. Look for the version number at the top.
  4. If your version is below 6.5, go to the Google app page, then tap Update.

Step 2: Add the same account to both devices

If you have multiple Google accounts, add the account that you used to set up Google Home to your phone. Note: If the phone that's responding isn't yours, then these steps won’t fix the issue.

Step 2: Add the account to your phone
  1. On your phone, open the Google app Google .
  2. At the top-left of the Home screen, tap Menu Menu .
  3. To the right of your email, tap the down arrowDown Arrow and then Add account.
  4. Follow the steps to add your account. After you add the account, you don’t need to stay signed in.

Step 3: How to use 'Ok Google'

Talk to Google Home

  • Say 'Ok Google.' (Your phone shouldn’t respond.)
  • Tip: You can also say 'Hey Google.'

Talk to your phone

  • When you’re at home, follow the steps below (choose the phone that you use).
  • When you’re not at home, say 'Ok Google.'

Phones with Google Assistant
  1. On your phone, touch & hold the Home button.
  2. Say a command or ask a question.
    To type instead, tap Type Type.
Phones without Google Assistant
  1. Go to your Home screen or open the Google app Google .
  2. In the search bar, tap Speak Microphone.
  3. Say a command or ask a question.
