Important: If you want to set up a Google Nest, Home, Pixel or Chromecast device in the Google Home app, visit Set up smart devices in the Google Home or Nest app.
You can remotely control compatible third-party smart devices when you set them up in the Google Home app.
Important: Belkin has informed us that on 31 January 2026, Wemo devices ended cloud service. This means that any features that rely on cloud connectivity through Google Home and the Wemo app will no longer function. In the Google Home app, any Wemo devices that you have connected will begin to appear offline at that time.
Set up smart home devices
If you haven't already, set up your smart home devices using the manufacturer's instructions. Learn more about compatible third-party smart home devices.
Tip: For Matter-enabled devices, you can set those up using the Google Home app. You can also share them from a third-party manufacturer’s app or use Matter’s Multi-Admin feature to share the device with Google Home. Learn how to set up, manage and control Matter-enabled devices with Google Home.
Connect smart home devices in the Google Home app
Important:
- Make sure that your device is plugged in or fully charged and powered on.
- If a third-party device isn't Matter-enabled, set it up in the manufacturer's app before you start.
- Open the Google Home app

At the top right, tap Add
Device
.
- Or, if a setup screen for your device appears, tap Set up or Next.
- If it's not the correct device, tap Not now or Set up a different device.
- Or, if a setup screen for your device appears, tap Set up or Next.

Scan the QR code of your device.
- Alternatively, tap Use setup code or Use pairing code, then enter the code for your device. The app tells you where to find it.
- Or, tap Add a different way, then enter your device or its brand in the search bar.
- If it's a Google or Matter-enabled device, select your device.
- Otherwise, select the device's app, then tap Link app or Check for devices and select your device.
- Follow the in-app steps to complete setup.

Manage your smart home devices
You can choose names to call your smart home devices.
- Open the Google Home app

- Tap Home
All devices
, then touch and hold your device's tile.
- Tap Settings
Name.
- Enter a name
tap Save.
Tip: Nicknames are alternative ways to reference smart devices in the Google Home app. The nicknames that you assign to smart devices in the Google Home app aren't reflected in the device maker's app.
To control your devices more easily, assign them to a room in a home. You can create a new home, create a new room or add your devices to an existing room. You can add each device to one room only.
Tip: All members of the home can control all devices in the home.
Add the device to an existing room in your current home
- Open the Google Home app

- Tap Home
All devices
, then touch and hold your device's tile.

Tap Settings
Room or Placement.
- Choose a room and tap Next.
Add the device to a new room in your current home
- Open the Google Home app
.
- Tap Home
All devices
, then touch and hold your device's tile.
- Tap Settings
Room or Placement.
- Select one of the existing rooms or Add a custom room. Then tap Next.
- If you make a custom room, enter a new room name and tap Next.
- You can also create a customised name for your device when you switch rooms.
Add the device to a room in a different home
- Open the Google Home app
.
- Tap Home
All devices
, then touch and hold your device's tile.

Tap Settings
Home.
- Select the home that you want to move your device to and select Next.
- On the summary page, tap Move device.
- Choose a room for the device in the new home
Next.
Tip: This action removes the device from the room in the first home. The device is still linked in the first home, but it should appear under 'In your home', 'Local devices' or 'Linked to you' instead of the room name.
Create a new room
You can create a new room for a device that's already in a room
- Open the Google Home app
.
- Tap Home
All devices
, then touch and hold your device's tile.
- Tap Settings
Room or Placement.
- Select a room under Create new
tap Next.
Rename a room
- Open the Google Home app
.
- At the top right, tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Home settings
Devices, groups and rooms.
- Select the room that you want to update.
- Tap Name and type the new room name
tap Save.
Delete a room
- Open the Google Home app
.
- At the top right, tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Home settings
Devices, groups and rooms.
- Select the room that you want to delete.
- Tap Delete room.
Tip: When you delete a room, any devices in it are removed. You can add them to a different room.

Important:
- You must have already set up your devices in the partner app (Step 1 above).
- If you sync multiple devices at once, you may receive a timeout error.
With the Google Home app
- Open the Google Home app

- Follow the steps to set a nickname for these devices and add them to a room.
Important: You can't unlink individual devices with the Google Home app. When you unlink a service through these steps, it removes all devices by that service. If you want to unlink an individual device, remove the device from the device maker’s app, then sync your devices with the Google Home app.
When you unlink a device from a home:
- It disconnects the device for all members of the home.
- It unlinks the device from your Google Account.
Unlink devices

- Under 'Linked services', tap the devices that you want to disconnect
Unlink account.
- To confirm your choice, tap Unlink.

Reconnect account.
- Follow the in-app steps.
Control your smart home devices
After you connect your smart devices to the Google Home app, you can use the Google Home app to control or automate them. If you have a voice assistant-enabled device, you can also control your home devices by voice.
- Open the Google Home app
