Fix issues with updates to speakers and displays

Your Google smart speakers and displays can automatically update their software to let you enjoy the latest features available. Also, during initial setup, your device automatically updates to the latest software version.

Tips:

  • During the update, your speaker or display won’t be able to answer questions or help you complete tasks. To talk with your voice assistant on your speaker or display, wait until the update is complete.
  • The update typically takes up to 10 minutes. If it takes much longer than expected, verify if it’s still updating by checking the LED light’s status. The light turns white and slowly spins while it gets the update.

For more information about updates and how to fix issues, choose your device below:

To successfully update your device, make sure that:
  1. Your speaker is powered on.
  2. The power cable is tightly connected to the adapter and the adapter is firmly plugged into a wall outlet.

The lights at the bottom of your speaker are a great way to check the status of your update. If after 15 minutes you get:

Slow pulsing white light

This is a sign that your speaker is ready to set up.

Spinning white light

This means that your speaker is downloading the update. Don't unplug or change your Wi-Fi settings during this time.

If the update has already taken more than 20 minutes, try the first step below. If that doesn't work, try the next step in the list:

  • Reboot Google Home Speaker. Unplug it from the power source, wait for about 10 seconds, and plug it back in.
  • Reboot your router. Unplug it from the power source, wait for about one minute, and plug it back in.
  • Factory reset the device. When you set it up again, connect it to a 2.4 GHz network, if available.

If this doesn't fix the issue, contact Google Home and Nest support.
