Settings for all devices with Google Assistant

You can customise your Google Assistant by changing your settings. These settings affect all devices where you use the Google Assistant.

Google Assistant settings

  • Music - Hear songs from your favorite music services
  • Home control  - Control your smart home devices
  • News  - Get the latest news from sources you trust
  • My Day  - Hear a summary about your upcoming day
  • TVs and Speakers  - Cast music and video to other devices
  • Shopping list   - Buy items (US only) and manage lists 
  • Videos and photos - Play TV shows and movies and see your photos on your TV. 

Change Google Assistant settings

Music

Here’s how to connect your music and pick a favourite music service as your default. This default service will be used first when possible.

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu  and then Music .
  3. To choose your default service, tap the radio button to the left of the service.
  4. For Spotify and Pandora, you will need to link your accounts.
    • For Google Play Music and YouTube Red, your accounts are automatically linked when you linked your Google Account to Google Home. 
    • For Spotify and Pandora, you will need to link your accounts.
      • To connect your account, tap LINK.
      • Sign in or sign up for the service and complete the sign-in flow.
      • To unlink an account, tap UNLINK. 

Available music services:

  1. Google Play Music 
  2. Spotify 

Note: For all services,  Google Home currently supports a single account per streaming service.

Home control

To control your smart home devices,

  1. Open the Google Home app .

  2. In the top-left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home. To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name.
  4. Tap Home control .

News

To get the latest news from sources you trust,

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top-left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google account listed is the one linked to Google Home. To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name.
  4. Tap More settings. 
  5. Under "Services," tap News .
  6. You’ll see a list of news sources that will play when you say 'Ok Google, listen to news.'
  7. To change the order of the list, tap Change Order  and then touch and hold the hashmark next to the news source. Drag the news source up or down.
  8. Customisation:
    1. Add news source:
      1. Tap "Add new source" and then Tap the check mark next to the news source.
    2. Remove news source:
      1. Tap the X next to the news source. 
    3. See news sources in other languages:
      1. Change the language at the top of the screen. 

News categories include:

General News

Business

Technology Science
Sport Health
World Art + Lifestyle
Politics Entertainment

My Day

To manage the summary about your upcoming day,

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top-left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home. To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name and email address.
  4. Tap More settings. 
  5. Under "Services," tap My Day  .
  6. Tap the tickbox next to option to include it in your My Day summary.
    • Weather - The daily forecast for your device address.
    • Work commute - Traffic overview for your commute.
    • Next meeting 
    • Reminders
      • Note: To hear reminders, they must already be set in the Google Inbox app, Google app or Google Calendar app, or by typing a reminder query in the Google search in the browser. You can't set Reminders in the Google Home app or using your voice. 
      • To hear your reminders, say "Ok Google, tell me about My Day". 
  7. You can choose how to end your My Day summary:
    • To end with nothing, tap the radio button next to Nothing
    • To end with news, tap the radio button next to News.

My Day includes:

  • Weather 
  • Work commute
  • Next meeting
  • Reminders

Note: Personal results must be turned on to use My Day.

TVs and Speakers

To manage other devices that can be used with voice control,

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top-left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home.  To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name and email address.
  4. Tap More settings. 
  5. Under "Services," tap TVs and Speakers .
  6. To add a device, tap the + button in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  7. Make sure there is a tick to the right of the devices that you want to add.
  8. Tap ADD in the top-right corner of the screen.
  9. You will now see all your devices within the TVs and speakers section of the in Google Home app.
  10. To unlink a device,
    1. In the top-right corner of the Home screen, tap Devices
    2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Linked Devices. 
    3. Tap the X next to the device that you want to unlink.

Shortcuts

To create and manage shortcuts, 

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home.  To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name and email address.
  4. Tap More settings.
  5. Under "Services," tap Shortcuts.
