Google Account settings

You can manage the Google Account settings associated with your Google Home app at any time. 

Note: The default Google Account is the account you used to set up Google Home. Currently, Google Home supports one Google Account per Google Home device. 

What you can manage in Google Account settings

  • Personal info - Within this section of the Google Home app, you can manage your:
    • Nickname
    • Home and work locations 
    • Preferences 
      • Weather unit
      • Assistant Voice (US only)
    • Email updates
  • Payments (US only) - Manage payment methods and addresses
  • Shared devices

Important: If you've linked your Google Account to multiple Google Home devices or a Nexus device, you'll see all of these devices listed in the dropdown. Each time you adjust one of these settings, make sure you've chosen the right device from the dropdown.

Personal info

Here’s how to manage your nickname, home and work addresses, and preferences:

Change your home and work locations

Your home and work location are synced with the Google Maps settings on your mobile device. However, you can manually set these addresses.

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home.  To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name.
  4. Tap More settings.
  5. Scroll down to find the section labeled "Google Account settings".
  6. Tap Personal info and thenHome and work locations.
  7. Type your home and work addresses. 
  8. To edit a home or work address, tap the current address and then type in a new address and then tap OK.
  9. To remove a home or work address, tap the X next to the address. 

Change your nickname

By default your nickname is the first name associated with your Google Account. However you can set a different nickname and teach the Google Assistant the correct pronunciation.

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home. To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name and email address.
  4. Tap More settings.
  5. Within "Account," tap Personal Info and thenNickname.
  6. To check the pronunciation, choose one of three options:
    1. Use default: Tap the radio button next to “Use default”. To hear pronunciation, tap Play. If it’s incorrect, try spelling it out or recording your own.
    2. Spell it out: Tap the radio button next to “Spell it out” and then type your name and then Play. Tip: Use latin characters to spell out the pronunciation. For example, Eva can be spelled as Ayva. 
    3. Record your own: Tap the radio button next to “Record your own” and then Record and then say your name. To hear the pronunciation, tap Play. To record again, tap Record again. 

Change your preferences

You can set up and manage your preferences and interests within the Google Home app.

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home. To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name and email address.
  4. Tap More settings.
  5. Under "Account," tap Personal info and thenPreferences.
  6. Under "Weather," tap the radio button next to your preferred temperature unit.
  7. Under "Assistant Voice, tap Voice I or Voice II. 

Get email updates

You can stay connected with the latest news and features about your Assistant.

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home. To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name and email address.
  4. Tap More settings.
  5. Within "Account," tap Personal info and thenEmail updates.
  6. To receive email updates, slide the slider to the right . To not receive email updates, slide the slider to the left .
Payments (US only)
Payments are only available in the US.

Here’s how to set up payments:
  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home. To switch accounts, tap the triangle next to the account name.
  4. Tap More settings.
  5. Under "Account,"  tap Payments and thenGET STARTED.
  6. Read the Terms of Service. Scroll down and tap ACCEPT. 
  7. Choose your default payment method:
    1. If you have already added a payment method for another Google service, for example Google Play, you can choose that payment method. Tap NEXT.
    2. If you need to add a payment method, tap Add credit or debit card.
      1. Enter the card information, billing name, billing street address, and phone number. Review the card details and tap SAVE.  ​
      2. This new payment method is now selected as your default payment method. Tap NEXT. 
  8. Choose your delivery address:
    1. If you have already added a delivery address for another Google service, you can choose that delivery address. Tap NEXT.
    2. If you need to add an address, tap Add new address. 
      1. Enter name, delivery address, and phone number. Tap SAVE.  ​
  9. Select which Google Home(s) can make payments. Note: This screen only appears if you have successfully set up Google Home(s):
    1. You'll see a list of all Google Homes that are successfully set up.
    2. Next to each Google Home, you'll see a toggle that controls the Personal results for that particular device. Remember, Personal results controls whether a specific Google Home can use your personal information, including payments and other things like email, calendar, and flights. 
    3. To allow Google Home to use your personal information, slide the slider next to that device to the right . Tap DONE. 
    4. To prevent Google Home from using your personal information, slide the slider next to that device to the left  . Tap DONE.
    5. Important:  If you turn off Personal results because you don't want your Assistant to help with payments, it won’t be able to help with other personal information like flights, shopping lists, calendars, etc. However, if you turn OFF payments and keep Personal results ON, your Assistant can still help other personal information, like calendar and flight info.  

 

 

Google Account FAQs

Find out which Google Account is linked to Google Home

For Google Home to share personalized results, you must be signed into the same Google Account that is linked to Google Home. 

To check which Google Account is linked to a Google Home device,

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. Make sure your phone or tablet is on the same Wi-Fi network as Google Home.
  3. In the top right corner of the Home screen, tap Devices  to see your available Google Home devices. 
  4. Scroll to find the device card for the Google Home for which you're checking to see the linked Google Account.
  5. In the top right corner of the device card, tap the device card menu More menu iconand thenSettings.
  6. Underneath "Linked accounts(s)", you'll see the Google Account(s) linked to this specific Google Home device. 
Check which Google Account you're signed into on the Google Home app
  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. At the top of the screen, you'll see the Google Account you're currently signed into.
  4. To change this account, tap the arrow to the right of the account and choose a different account. 
Unlink a Google Account from Google Home when phone/tablet is on same network as Google Home
To unlink a Google Account from Google Home when your phone or tablet is on the same network as Google Home,
  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top right corner of the Home screen, tap Devices  to see your available Google Home devices. 
  3. Scroll to find the device card for the Google Home you'd like to unlink a Google Account.
  4. In the top right corner of the device card, tap the device card menu More menu iconand thenSettings.
  5. Underneath "Linked accounts(s)", you'll see the Google Account that was used to set up this specific Google Home device. 
  6. Tap Linked account(s).
  7. Tap the X next to the name of the account you'd like to unlink.
  8. Tap Unlink to remove this specific Google Home device from that Google Account. 
Unlink a Google Account from Google Home and link a new Google Account

To unlink a Google Account from Google Home and link a new Google Account, 

Android

Step 1. Unlink your Google Account from Google Home

  1. Make sure your phone or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as Google Home.
  2. Open the Google Home app .
  3. In the top right corner of the Home screen, tap Devices  to see your available Google Home devices. 
  4. Scroll to find the device card for the Google Home that is no longer responding to your queries or stopped recognizing your voice.
  5. In the top right corner of the device card, tap the device card menu More menu iconand thenSettings and then Linked account(s) and then  X next to your Google Account.
  6. Tap Unlink to remove your Google Account from Google Home.  

Step 2. Relink your Google Account to Google Home

  1. Tap the blue banner and then Sign in required and then complete the sign in steps. 
  2. If you don’t see the blue banner,  tap Back . If you still don’t see the blue banner,
    1. Force quit the Google Home app.
    2. Open the Google Home app .
    3. In the top right corner of the Home screen, tap Devices  to see your available Google Home devices. 
    4. Scroll to find the device card for the Google Home that is no longer responding to your queries or stopped recognizing your voice.
    5. In the top right corner of the device card, tap the device card menu More menu iconand thenSettings and then  blue banner at top and then Sign in and then complete the sign in steps. 

iOS

Step 1. Unlink your Google Account from Google Home

  1. Make sure your phone or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as Google Home.
  2. Open the Google Home app .
  3. In the top right corner of the app's Home screen, tap Devices  to see your available Google Home devices. 
  4. Scroll to find the device card for the Google Home that is no longer responding to your queries or stopped recognizing your voice.
  5. In the top right corner of the device card, tap the device card menu More menu iconand thenSettings and then Linked account(s) and then X next to your Google Account.
  6. Tap Unlink to remove your Google Account from Google Home.  

Step 2. Relink your Google Account to Google Home

  1. Tap the yellow banner and then Sign in and then complete the sign in steps. 
  2. If you don’t see the yellow banner,  tap Back . If you still don’t see the yellow banner,
    1. Force quit the Google Home app by double tapping the your phone's Home button and then finding the Google Home app screen and then swiping up. 
    2. Open the Google Home app .
    3. In the top right corner of the app's Home screen, tap Devices  to see your available Google Home devices. 
    4. Scroll to find the device card for the Google Home that is no longer responding to your queries or stopped recognizing your voice.
    5. In the top right corner of the device card, tap the device card menu More menu iconand thenSettings and then  yellow banner at top and then Sign in and then complete the sign in steps. 
See / manage all devices linked to a Google Account
To see all devices linked to a Google Home account, 
  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. Make sure your phone or tablet is on the same Wi-Fi network as Google Home.
  3. In the top right corner of the Home screen, tap Devices  to see your available Google Home devices. 
  4. Scroll to the bottom. 
  5. Tap Linked Devices. 
  6. You'll see a list of all devices linked to your Google Account. 

To unlink a device, 

  1. Tap and thenRemove to remove the device. 

 

Link an additional Google Account to Google Home

Note: The steps below are how to add an additional Google Account to the users Google Home app. These shouldn't be used for switching the Google Account linked the Google Home device. Those steps are in the section above titled "Unlink a Google Account from Google Home and link a new Google Account."

  1. Open the Google Home app
  2. In the top left corner of the home screen, tap Menu 
  3. Tap the down arrow next to the name of the current Google account which is logged in.
    1. If the account you want to link is listed in the dropdown menu, select it.
    2. If you want to link a brand new Google account, then proceed to next step.  
  4. Tap Manage accounts and then Add account. 
  5. Select Google from the list of available providers. 
  6. Enter your login credentials.
  7. Your account should now be linked to your Google Home app. 
Link a G Suite Account to Google Home

Instructions for G Suite Super Administrators

If you are the G Suite Super Administrator, follow these steps:

  1. To turn the service on or off for select groups of users, first put their accounts in an organizational unit.
  2. Log into your administrator account. This will open the Google Admin console.
  3. From the Admin console dashboard, go to Apps > Additional Google services.
  4. Click Web & app activity to open its settings page.
  5. At the top of the gray box, click More Settingsand choose:
    • On for everyone to turn on the service for all users (click again to confirm).
    • Off to turn off the service for all users (click again to confirm).
    • On for some organizations to change the setting only for some users.
  6. If you chose On for some organizations:
    1. Select the organization that contains the users whose settings you want to change.
    2. Click Override or Inherit, whichever appears.

      Override makes the setting stay the same, even if the parent setting changes.
      Inherit reverts to the same setting as its parent.

    3. If you clicked Override, click On On or Off Off to change the setting.
    4. Click Apply twice to confirm.

  7. Click Apply.

Instructions for G Suite users 

Once the G Suite Super Administrator has turned on Web & App Activity using the steps above, G Suite users can follow these steps to add an account:

  1. Depending on your device, open Google settings in one of these places:

    • Settings app and thenGoogle

    • Google Settings
    • On some Android devices, open your Settings app and then General.
  2. Tap Personal info & privacy and then Activity controls and then Web & App Activity.
  3. Toggle the slider to the right to turn it on .
