Buy items and manage a shopping list

Order everyday essentials & add items to your shopping list with your Google Assistant on Google Home.

Step 1: Set up payments

To start shopping, you must set up payments. 

Set up payments
  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one you used to set up Google Home. To switch accounts, tap the triangle next to the account name.
  4. Tap More settings.
  5. Scroll down to find the section labeled "Google Account settings."
  6. Tap Payments and thenGET STARTED.
  7. Read the Terms of Service. Scroll down and tap ACCEPT. 
  8. Choose your default payment method:
    1. If you have already added a payment method for another Google service, for example Google Play, you can choose that payment method. Tap NEXT.
    2. If you need to add a payment method, tap Add credit or debit card.
      1. Enter the card information, billing name, billing street address, and phone number. Review the card details and tap SAVE.  ​
      2. This new payment method is now selected as your default payment method. Tap NEXT. 
  9. Choose your delivery address:
    1. If you have already added a delivery address for another Google service, you can choose that delivery address. Tap NEXT.
    2. If you need to add an address, tap Add new address. 
      1. Enter name, delivery address, and phone number. Tap SAVE.  ​
  10. Select which Google Home(s) can make payments. Note: This screen only appears if you have successfully set up Google Home(s):
    1. You'll see a list of all Google Homes that are successfully set up.
    2. Next to each Google Home, you'll see a toggle that controls the Personal results for that particular device. Remember, Personal results controls whether a specific Google Home can use your personal information, including payments and other things like email, calendar, and flights. 
    3. To allow Google Home to use your personal information, slide the slider next to that device to the right . Tap DONE. 
    4. To prevent Google Home from using your personal information, slide the slider next to that device to the left  . Tap DONE.
    5. Important:  If you turn off Personal results because you don't want your Assistant to help with payments, it won’t be able to help with other personal information like flights, shopping lists, calendars, etc. However, if you turn OFF payments and keep Personal results ON, your Assistant can still help other personal information, like calendar and flight info.

Step 2: Buy an item using your voice

You can only buy or re-order a single item per order, even if it is the same item. For example, you can't say "Hey Google, buy two packages of paper towels" (same item) or "Hey Google, buy paper towels and garbage bags" (different items). You'll need to completely purchase one single-time order and then start a new order for additional items. Each single item order has its own tracking number. Multiple item purchases are coming soon.

Tip: If you don't specify a store, store results are based on your Google Express order history. If you haven't ordered this item before, you'll hear results from stores that carry the item

Buy a single from a specific store

"Buy <product> from <store>,' "Purchase <product> from <store>,' "Order <product> from <store>"

Reorder a single item

Tip: These items are based on your Google Express order history

Note: Some items that are available on Google Express and in the Google Express app may not be available on Google Home. Also, due to a gradual rollout, shopping functionality may not always be available on Google Home. If your Google Assistant asks you "try shopping again tomorrow", please try again the following day.

Service fees are waived

You won't be charged a service fee when ordering on Google Home until April 30, 2017. If you place an order for a Costco item without a Costco membership, you won’t see Costco access fees during this time either.

Cancel or change existing orders

Cancel order or add substitute options
You can cancel any order until it’s been paid for in-store. You’ll also have 15 minutes after placing your order to pick substitutes in case your item is out of stock. Note: You can’t cancel an order by voice. 

From email:

  1. Open the order confirmation email.
  2. Click SEE MORE to get to your Orders page, where you can cancel your order until it’s been paid for in-store, or add substitutes.

From Google Express site:

  1. Open Google Express.
  2. In the top right corner of the browser, click My Account and then Orders and then Cancel Order. 

From Google Express app:

  1. Open your Google Express app.
  2. Tap on the House icon with the “New” status shown underneath. You can cancel an order until it’s shown as “In progress.”
  3. In the Order details screen, tap Cancel order.
Change items in order

Once you’ve submitted your order, it isn’t possible to edit the items in your delivery. However, you can always place a second order for any additional items you need, or cancel the order and place a new one.

Track your order

To check on the status of your Google Express order, go to your Orders page, under My Account. Your order status will move from “Packed,” to “In Transit,” to “Completed.”  Here's more on tracking your order.

Add items to a shopping list

Note: Currently we only support a single shopping list. 

To do this: Say "Ok Google" or “Hey Google,” then...
Add item to an existing shopping list “Add paper towels to my shopping list.”
Add multiple items to list “Add paper towels and batteries to my shopping list.”
Ask what’s on existing list “What’s on my shopping list?”

View shopping list

From Google Home app
  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one you used to set up Google Home. To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name or email address.
  4. Tap Shopping list .
  5. The Google Keep app or website will open.
  6. Add or remove items as you normally do using Google Keep.
From Google Keep
  1. Google Keep app - If you've installed the app, open the app and search for your list.
  2. Browser - http://google.com/keep

Unavailable items

Some items aren't available to buy using Google Home. These include:

  • All restricted products and services for Google Express
  • Fresh produce
  • Perishables, including dairy products
  • Most clothing and accessory items
  • Furniture
  • Anything less than $3.99 and more than $100, pre-tax. Note: Each single item must be $3.99 or more. For example, you can't buy 4 packs of $.99 gum to reach the $3.99 limit.
