How were the exams developed?

Google Workspace for Education certification exams are developed following an internationally accepted development process to ensure validity, reliability, and relevance. The phases of exam development include:

  • Objective Domain definition - The objectives for the exam are determined based on job-role feedback provided by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) inside and outside of Google.
  • Blueprint - Each objective is weighted based on its importance to the overall job role.
  • Item development - SMEs develop exam items based on the exam objectives and blueprint.
  • Technical review - Each exam item is reviewed to ensure technical accuracy. Reviewers can include Google employees or employees of Partner organizations.
  • Beta testing - Exam items are delivered to candidates under conditions similar to the final exam when it's published. This allows the performance of each item to be evaluated.
  • Item selection - Based on statistics gathered during the beta testing, items can be kept for the live exam or rejected. SMEs then determine final questions and a pass score..

Are there specific browsers or other requirements for taking the exams?

Yes, you must be using the latest version of Chrome in order to start the certification exams. Please update your browser if you are having difficulty starting the exam.

For labs, test takers are encouraged to open an incognito window for the best experience. If users don’t have access to incognito, the exam provides an option for launching a remote session.

If your organization's IT policies prevent you from logging in to an exam lab's Google user account directly in your own browser, you can instead connect to a full, remote web browser session. The instance runs inside a virtual machine provided to you for the purpose of this exam lab. You can use this remote browser session to log in to an exam lab's Google user account. You can then perform all of the exam lab steps, as per the lab instructions, in the remote browser link provided.

How much are the exams?

The exams are free of charge through June 1, 2026. Thereafter the cost is as follows:

  • $10 for Google Certified Educator Level 1
