Environment
Allow Workspace users to send and receive mail through a third-party mail client.
Solution
To sync Gmail with other mail clients, follow the steps below:
Allow users to access less secure apps
You can allow users to turn on or off access to less secure apps or disable their ability to allow less secure apps.
- From the Admin console Home page, go to Security > Less secure apps.
- To apply the setting to all users, leave the top organizational unit selected. Otherwise, select a child organizational unit or a configuration group.
- Select the setting for less secure apps:
- Allow users to manage their access to less secure apps
Users can turn on or turn off access to less secure apps.
- Allow users to manage their access to less secure apps
- Click Save.
Note: It can take 24 hours for these changes to take effect.
Turn on access to less secure apps for your Workspace account
1. Open a new tab or window.
2. Sign in to your Google account.
3. Go to https://myaccount.google.com/lesssecureapps.
4. Click Turn on access.
Allow per-user outbound gateways for your domain
Go to Allow per-user outbound gateways or follow the steps below:
- From the Admin console Home page, go to Apps Google Workspace Gmail End User Access.
Tip: To see End User Access, scroll to the bottom of the Gmail page. - In the Allow per-user outbound gateways section, select Allow users to send mail through an external SMTP server when configuring a "from" address hosted outside your email domains.
When this check box is selected, users who associate additional email addresses with their accounts can enter connection information for an alternate SMTP server.

When the check box is not selected, users cannot specify an SMTP server for the additional address. - At the bottom, click Save.
It can take up to 24 hours for changes to take effect.
Turn on IMAP
Go to Check Gmail through other email platforms or follow these steps:
- On your computer, open Gmail.
- In the top right, click Settings See all settings.
- Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
- In the IMAP access section, select Enable IMAP.
- Click Save Changes.
Update settings in your mail client
Go to Check Gmail through other email platforms or set the following values in your mail client's settings:
Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server
imap.gmail.com
Requires SSL: Yes
Port: 993
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server
smtp.gmail.com
Requires SSL: Yes
Requires TLS: Yes (if available)
Requires Authentication: Yes
Port for SSL: 465
Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587
