Record a video on your Pixel phone

You can record real time, slow motion, and augmented reality videos on your phone. You can also record time-lapse videos that speed up when you play them.

Important: Some of these steps work only on Android 10 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Record a video

Tip: To quickly record a video, open your Google Camera app, then touch and hold Capture Shutter.

  1. Open your Google Camera app Google Camera. Learn how to open your camera app.
  2. To switch to video mode, tap Video.
  3. To start recording, tap Record Record.
    • To put a cut in your video, tap Pause Pause. To start recording again, tap Record Record.
    • To take a high-resolution photo while recording a video, tap Capture Shutter.
  4. To stop recording, tap Stop Stop.

Tip: You can change your camera settings, like using gridlines or a flash. Learn how to adjust how your camera takes video.

Record a slow motion video

  1. Open your Google Camera app Google Camera. Learn how to open your camera app.
  2. Tap More and then Slow Motion.
  3. To start recording, tap Record Record.
  4. To stop recording, tap Stop Stop.

Note: To record very high speeds in slow motion, choose 1/8x.

Record an augmented reality video

You can take videos with characters and objects in them. The 3D characters are called Playmoji. The 2D characters are stickers.

  1. Open your Google Camera app Google Camera. Learn how to open your camera app.
  2. Tap More and then Playground.
  3. Pick a Playmoji. Your phone suggests Playmoji based on your shot. You can tap Playground for more.
  4. Tap, hold, and drag a Playmoji to where you want it. In selfies, characters react and move around on their own.
    • Add text: Tap Text Text and pick a style to type your message. Your phone might also suggest text based on your shot.
    • Change the size of an object: Tap the object. Then pinch your fingers open or closed. In selfies, characters react and move around on their own
    • Remove an object: Tap an object and then Delete Delete.
    • See a different collection: Tap Playground or Text Text and browse through the different categories.
  5. Tap and hold Capture Capture photo

To stop using Playground, tap Close Close.

Record a time-lapse video

To record changes that take place slowly over time, like a sunset:

  1. Open your Google Camera app Google Camera. Learn how to open your camera app.
  2. Tap More and then Time Lapse.
  3. Pick how much to speed up time. For example:
    • For 50 seconds in reality to take 10 seconds in the video, tap 5x.
    • For 20 minutes in reality to take 10 seconds in the video, tap 120x.
  4. Tap Record Record.
  5. To stop recording, tap Stop Stop.

Note: To save power, your screen sometimes dims when your camera shoots a time-lapse.
