If you're using the “Do not optimize: Rotate ads indefinitely” ad rotation setting (formerly known as “Rotate Evenly”), you may notice that your ads are serving unevenly. This article covers some of the reasons for these issues.
Check your ad's rotation settings
If your ads are serving unevenly even though “rotate indefinitely” is selected, your campaign may have been opted into this setting after the affected timeline.
Keep in mind
The "Rotate indefinitely" setting delivers your ads more evenly into the ad auction for an indefinite amount of time, but doesn’t optimize your ad.
How to check your ad's rotation settings
- In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon
.
- Click Overview.
- From the Views bar at the top, click the View filter and select a campaign type.
- Click the Campaigns filter and select the campaign that you’d like to change.
Note: If you prefer to use the navigation panel on the left, select Change view in the top left of your Google Ads account.
- Click the Campaigns drop down in the section menu.
- Click Campaigns.
- Click the Settings tab at the top of the page.
- Click Additional settings.
- Click to expand the “Ad rotation” section.
- Click Settings in the page menu.
- Click Additional settings.
- Select Optimize: Prefer best performing ads.
- If "Optimize: Prefer best performing ads" was selected before the affected timeline, this is why your ad is serving unevenly.
- But, if "Do not optimize: Rotate ads indefinitely" was selected, this explains your ad's uneven serving.
- Setting ads to rotate evenly doesn’t always mean that ads will serve more evenly. It means that ads will enter the auction more evenly. Because ads aren’t guaranteed to win every auction entered, ads don’t always rotate evenly.
- Other factors such as ad quality, bid, competition, etc. may influence how an ad serves.
