Keyword Planner: Create and manage your keyword plan

This article goes over how to use Keyword Planner to add keywords to your plan, see forecasts for your keywords, set a bid for your plan, and edit keywords. 

Instructions

Before you begin

  1. Sign in to your Google Ads account
  2. In the upper right corner, click the tools icon , then under "Planning," click Keyword Planner
  3. Type or paste one or more of the following in the "Find new keywords" search box and, on your keyboard, press “Enter” after each one:
    • Words or phrases that describe what you're advertising.
    • The URL of a webpage or entire website related to your business.
  4. Click Get started.

See forecasts for keywords in your plan

  1. In the table of results, check the box to the left of any keywords that you’d like to add to your plan.
  2. In the blue bar that appears above the table, choose an existing ad group or create a new ad group to add your keyword ideas to, then select a match type for your keyword ideas. Learn more about keyword match types
  3. Click Add to plan.
  4. To see a dashboard of forecasts for your plan, click Plan overview in the page menu on the left. With your results, you can use the “Plan overview” page to:
    • See forecasts for your plan, broken down by top keywords, locations, and devices.
    • Change the parameters on each forecast for detailed insights into your plan’s potential success.
  5. To see forecasts for your ad groups, click Ad groups in the page menu on the left. With your results, you can use the “Ad groups” page to:
    • Get updated ad group forecasts based on a default bid.
    • Sort your results by clicks, cost, match type, impressions, CTR, or average CPC.
    • Customize your ad group forecasts by date range to see how seasonality affects traffic.
    • Download plan forecasts.
  6. To see forecasts for specific keywords, click Keywords in the page menu on the left. With your results, you can use the “Forecasts” page to:
    • Get updated keyword forecasts based on a default bid.
    • Sort your results by clicks, cost, match type, impressions, CTR, or average CPC.
    • Customize your keyword forecasts by date range to see how seasonality affects traffic.
    • Download plan forecasts.
  7. To see your historical statistics, like average monthly searches or competition data, click Keywords in the page menu on the left, then click Historical metrics at the top of the page. With your results, you can use the “Historical metrics” page to:
    • See historical statistics for your keyword ideas by date range.
    • Download historical statistics of the keywords in your plan.

Edit keywords in your plan

After you’ve created a plan, you can make changes to your ad group and keywords ideas in the table to help you get an even better idea how your keywords might perform. For example, you can easily change the max CPC in the field at the top of the page to see if different bids might better help you reach your advertising goals.

How to add more ad groups or keywords to your plan

  1. From the left hand navigation panel, click Keywords
  2. Click the blue plus sign .
  3. To add keywords to a new ad group, click Select an ad group and then click Create ad group
    • Enter your new ad group name, then click Create.
    • Enter your keywords in the box, one per line or separated by commas. 
    • Click Save.
  4. To add keywords to an existing ad group, click Select an ad group and choose the ad group you want to add keywords to. 
    • Enter your keywords in the box, one per line or separated by commas. 
    • Click Save.

How to remove keywords from your plan

  1. From the left hand navigation panel, click Keywords
  2. Check the boxes next to the keywords you wish to remove. 
  3. Click Remove in the blue bar that appears above the table of results.

Save keywords to your account

Once you've built a plan, you can get forecasts for those keywords and save them to your account.

  1. To add keywords to your plan, check the box to the left of the keywords you wish to add.
    • To add the selected keywords to an ad group, click the “Adding to new ad group” dropdown. Select the ad group you wish to add keywords to, or add the selected keywords to a new ad group by clicking the “Adding to new ad group” dropdown and entering a name for your new ad group. 
    • By default, your keywords will be added as broad match. To change this, click the “Broad match” dropdown and select a different match type. Learn more about keyword match types 
  2. Click Add to plan.
  3. To see forecasts for your selected keywords, click View forecast from the alert box at the bottom of the page, or click Keywords in the left hand panel. 
    • You'll see a graph with a range of maximum cost-per-click (max CPC) bids and traffic forecasts. By default, we'll show the number of clicks per day that all of your keywords might get for different bids. 
    • To see different metrics, like impressions or cost, select the appropriate metric name from the dropdown above the graph.
    • To get detailed forecasts in the table, adjust the underlined max CPC bid, or hover and click on any point on the graph to choose a bid.
  4. When you’re ready to create a new campaign, click Save to account
  5. Enter a campaign name and a daily budget, then click Save
