Understanding call clicks

Call clicks metrics will appear in your Smart campaign dashboard if a phone number is added to a Smart campaign without a Google forwarding number (GFN). Call clicks are the number of times potential customers tapped the "Call" button in your ad from mobile devices. Knowing the approximate number of calls coming from your ad can help you understand your ad's effectiveness in driving business. Your ad can also generate calls by directing people to your website. However, those calls aren't included in this metric.

How to set up call clicks

A phone number can be added during the creation of a new Smart campaign, or by editing the Smart campaign after it has been created.
  1. Click All campaigns.
  2. In the dashboard, click Create new campaign.
  3. Select an advertising goal.
    1. If “Get more calls” is selected, a phone number must be added during the campaign creation.
    2. If “Get more visits to your physical location” is selected, adding a phone number is optional during the campaign creation.
    3. If “Get more website sales or sign-ups” is selected, there is no option to add a phone number during campaign creation, but it can be added later by editing the campaign.
  4. Follow the step-by-step instructions to choose your audience and write your ad text.
  5. When you're asked to enter a business phone number, enter the number for the phone on which you’d like your customers to call.

If you're advertising in a country that doesn't support Google forwarding numbers (GFN) (see the list of countries where GFN is available here), verified call tracking will not be available. In this case, call metrics will be reported as call clicks, not verified calls. Learn more about call clicks

  6. Click Next.
  7. Follow the instructions to set your budget and finish creating your ad.

  1. Click All campaigns, and then click the name of the campaign you want to edit.
  2. Find the “Ad preview” card, and click the 3-dot icon 3 dot icon.
  3. Click Edit phone number.

If you're advertising in a country that doesn't support Google forwarding numbers (GFN) (see the list of countries where GFN is available here), verified call tracking will not be available. 4. Enter your phone number.
  5. Click Save
Google forwarding numbers (GFN) are mandatory for new Smart campaigns with a linked phone number in all countries where GFN is available. See the list of countries where GFN is available.
