Link Optimise and Google Ads

This article only applies to the previous AdWords experience. Determine which AdWords experience you’re using.

If necessary, switch to the previous AdWords experience before following the steps below


Integrating Google Ads with Google Optimise allows you to easily target experiments and personalised experiences to specific ads and keywords. You can personalise your existing web pages to match each of your users' intents based on the campaign they clicked on or the keywords that triggered the ad.

This article shows you how to link your Google Ads and Optimise accounts.

Before you begin

To link Google Ads and Optimise, you’ll need to use a Google Account with the following permissions for Optimise and Google Ads:

  1. For Optimise, you'll need 'Edit' permission.
    1. Navigate to your Optimise Accounts page.
    2. Click Edit permissions in the header of the account that you want to manage.
    3. Click an email address to expose the user details panel.
    4. Click the drop-down menu next to each role to select the appropriate permission level.
    5. Click Done when complete.
  2. For Google Ads, you'll need administrative access.
    1. To check your account access, click the settings menu , and select Account settings. In the menu on the left, select Account access.


How to link Google Ads and Optimise

  1. Sign into your Google Ads account.
  2. Click the settings menu .
  3. Click Linked accounts.
  4. Click Google Analytics.
  5. Click On to 'Enable Optimise account linking'.

Edit or remove linked Optimise accounts

Once you've linked an Optimise account, you can edit its settings or unlink it entirely. You must have Optimise 'Edit' permission or administrative access to edit or remove a link.

  • Sign into your Google Ads account.
  • Click the settings menu , then select Linked accounts.
  • Under 'Google Analytics', click View details.
  • You'll see a list of Optimise accounts that you have access to. Click Edit next to the account that you want to edit or unlink.
    • Edit: Turn off links.
    • Unlink: Click Remove link.
  • Click Save.

When you unlink your Optimise account, you’ll no longer receive new data from Google Ads, but keep all the data from before you unlinked your account. New experiment sessions from unlinked Google Ads accounts will appear in Optimise reports as '(not set)'. Google Ads entity names, IDs and statuses for campaigns and ad groups based on the linked account will be closed.
