See Google Maps directions and routes

You can see a list of step-by-step directions for just about anywhere in Google Maps. Travel by car, public transit, foot, or bicycle. Choose from multiple routes and estimate your arrival time.

Note: Getting a list of directions isn’t the same as turn-by-turn navigation. Learn how to use voice-guided navigation.

  1. Open the Google Maps app maps.
  2. Search for your destination or touch it on the map.
  3. In the bottom right, touch the blue circle. It’ll show a car, bus, person walking, or bike.

  4. From the top, choose your mode of transit.
  5. To see the list of driving, walking, or biking directions, swipe up on the white bar in the bottom of the screen. It’s the one that shows the travel time and distance. Note: For transit directions, you need to choose a route, then swipe up on the white bar.

Tip: To choose another driving, walking, or biking route, touch it on the map. Each route shows the estimated travel time on the map.

Customize your route

Avoid tolls
  1. Open the Google Maps app maps.
  2. Search for your destination or touch it on the map.
  3. In the bottom right, touch the blue circle. It’ll show a car, bus, bike, or person walking.
  4. From the top, touch the car button .
  5. From the top right, touch the menu three vertical dots > Route options.
  6. Touch Avoid tolls.

Change your starting point and destination

By default, your starting point is your location. Here’s how to change where you start and where you’re going:

  1. Open the Google Maps app maps.
  2. Search for your destination or touch it on the map.
  3. In the bottom right, touch the blue circle. It’ll show a car, bus, bike, or person walking.
    • To edit your starting point, go to the box at the top of the screen and touch Your location.
    • To edit your destination, touch what’s listed in the “to” box.
  4. Search for a new starting point or touch Choose on map.

To go back to the map, go to the top left and touch the arrow .

Share directions

You can send directions to someone using Google Maps and a messaging app of your choice. A list of directions and a link to open the route in Google Maps is included in your message.

  1. Open the Google Maps app maps.
  2. In the bottom right, touch the direction button directions button image.
  3. Select a route.
  4. In the upper right, touch the menu three vertical dots.
  5. Touch Share directions.
Where you can get public transit directions

Not all cities have public transit directions in Google Maps. Before you can get transit directions, your local transit agency needs to add their route info to Google Maps. See which cities are covered.

Print directions

You can’t print directions from your phone or tablet, but you can from your computer. Learn how to print directions.

For an older Android device or older version of Google Maps

Get directions

  1. Open the Google Maps app maps.
  2. Touch Menu > Directions.
  3. Select your starting point and destination. Your starting point will be your location, but you can change it to an address or the name of a place.
  4. Touch the transportation icon (car, bus, bike, or person) to see different routes.
  5. To see your route on the map, touch Get Directions. To start turn-by-turn navigation, touch the navigation button .
    Note: Navigation might not be available for your region and transportation method.

Get a list of directions

Get driving, transit, walking, or biking directions using Google Maps in your mobile browser.

  1. Go to maps.google.com.
  2. Touch the directions icon directions button image.
  3. Set your destination by typing the name or address. You can touch Your location to change the starting point. If you don’t see “Your location,” touch Choose starting point.
  4. Select the car, transit, walking, or cycling icon.
  5. Select your route.

Tip: You can get there easily with voice-guided navigation. Maps reads directions aloud as you need them so you can focus on the road. Get started by downloading the Google Maps app on your phone.
