Use turn-by-turn navigation

You can use Google Maps voice navigation in the Google Maps app. Voice navigation helps you get to places easily when you drive, walk, or bike. You’ll hear traffic conditions, where to turn, which lane to use, and if there's a better route. If you get off track, Maps will automatically find a new route for you.

Note: Turn-by-turn navigation and info about which lane to use aren't available in all regions and languages.

Start and exit voice navigation

To start and exit voice navigation, follow the steps below.

  1. Open the Google Maps app maps.
  2. Get directions to a location.
  3. To hear voice-guided navigation, touch Navigate .
  4. To exit, go to the bottom left and touch the X.

You can see about how long it'll take to get where you're going at the bottom of the screen.

What the colors mean

The time it takes to get to your destination will show up in different colors depending on the traffic. Here's what the colors mean:

  • Red = Heavy traffic
  • Yellow = Some traffic
  • Green = Very little traffic
  • Gray = No traffic information is available

Switch to miles or kilometers

  1. Open the Google Maps app maps.
  2. Touch the Menu > Settings > Distance units.
  3. Choose the unit you want.
Mute voice navigation during phone calls and all the time

You can silence voice navigation by touching the mute button.

  1. Open the Google Maps app maps.
  2. Start navigation.
  3. In the top right, touch Sound .
  4. Touch Mute .

To turn voice navigation back on, touch Mute > Sound.

Tip: You can also silence voice navigation by touching the volume controls on your device.

Turn off voice navigation during phone calls

To turn off voice navigation during a phone call, follow the steps below.

  1. Open the Google Maps app maps.
  2. Touch the Menu > Settings > Navigation settings.
    • To turn off voice navigation during phone calls, uncheck the box next to "Play voice during phone calls."
    • To turn on voice navigation during phone calls, check the box next to "Play voice during phone calls."

Tips and tricks

Start navigation quickly

  1. Open the Google Maps app maps.
  2. Search for a place or touch it on the map.
  3. Touch and hold the transportation button. It'll show a car, bike, or person walking. Google Maps will automatically choose the best route and open navigation.

Tip: You can add a widget to your home screen to easily get directions to a place you travel to often, like work or home.

Use voice commands in navigation

You can use your voice during navigation. To use voice commands, follow the steps below.

  1. Open the Google Maps app maps.
  2. Start navigation.
  3. In the top right, touch Search .
  4. Touch Speak . Then, say what you want navigation to do.

To see the step-by-step list, touch the white bar at the bottom.

To go back to the map view, swipe down from the top to the bottom of your screen.

Switch to another route

Alternate routes are shown in gray on the map. You can pick a different route at any time.

  1. Open the Google Maps app maps.
  2. Start navigation.
  3. In the bottom right, touch Alternate route .
  4. Choose the route you want. Navigation will now use that route.

Tips for saving battery life

Your battery is used faster with navigation because Maps uses these things from your device:

  • Your current location
  • Your screen
  • Your speakers

Battery-saving tips

Here are some quick tips for saving battery life while using navigation:

1. Use a power adapter

You don't need to worry about your battery draining if your phone is charging. We recommend using a power adaptor, especially when your trip is longer than 30 minutes.

2. Turn off your screen

If you don't need to see the screen while using navigation, touch the power button to turn it off. You'll still get voice navigation through your device's speakers.

See the map from your point of view
  1. Open the Google Maps app maps.
  2. Search for a place or drop a pin on the map.
  3. Start navigation.
  4. At the right side of the screen, touch the Compass . You'll now see the map from your point of view.
Answer a phone call

If you get a phone call while navigating somewhere, you can answer the call, but voice instructions will continue unless you turn them off.

When you’re finished with your call, touch End. If you don’t see navigation, relaunch the app.
