Notebooks you create in Gemini Notebook automatically appear in AI Mode in Google Search. You can access, create, edit, and chat with your notebooks from either Gemini Notebook or AI Mode.
Learn where the integration is supported
- In all countries supported by Gemini Notebook, excluding the European Economic Area (EEA).
- Notebooks in AI Mode are currently only available in English.
Learn what syncs across Gemini Notebook & AI Mode
- Custom instructions sync: Your notebook uses a single set of custom instructions across both apps. Any changes you make to your notebook's instructions in one app will apply in AI Mode in Google Search, Gemini Apps, and Gemini Notebook as well.
- Changes to your notebook sync: When you rename a notebook, add sources, or update custom instructions in one app, those changes sync to the other apps.
- Tip: If your updates do not appear right away, try refreshing.
- Notebook deletions sync: When you delete a notebook or source in one app, those changes sync to the other apps.
- Sharing behavior: Notebooks that you own that are shared with others will be visible in AI Mode. Notebooks shared with you owned by others will not be visible in AI Mode in Google Search. You can continue to access these shared notebooks in Gemini Notebook as usual.
Understand how chats sync across apps
- AI Mode chats in your notebook are only available in AI Mode in Google Search.
- Chats do not sync with Gemini Apps or Gemini Notebook. Your AI Mode chats will not be available on those apps.
- Notebook chats using Gemini Apps or Gemini Notebook will not be available in AI Mode.
Understand key differences between Gemini Notebook & AI Mode
Source grounding
Your notebooks are available in AI Mode in Google Search, Gemini Apps, and Gemini Notebook, but each app grounds chat responses differently.
- Gemini Notebook: Grounds responses exclusively in your notebook sources.
- AI Mode in Google Search & Gemini Apps: Grounds responses in your notebook sources, but may also include web search and other tools.
Artifacts
AI Mode in Google Search will not have the ability to generate items from the Gemini Notebook Studio panel. This includes the ability to make artifacts, such as Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, Infographics, and Slide Decks. These features are only available in Gemini Notebook.
Shared notebooks
- In Gemini Notebook: All notebooks that you have access to are visible, including notebooks you own and notebooks that have been shared with you.
- In AI Mode in Google Search: All notebooks that you own are visible. But notebooks owned by someone else that are shared with you do not appear.
Play Books ebooks sources
You can only add and interact with eligible Play Books ebooks as sources in Gemini Notebook, not AI Mode in Google Search.
Data use & retention
Chats in AI Mode may be used for ads monetization, personalization, and to improve Google generative AI models. Other data in your notebook, including sources and instructions, will not be used for ads monetization, personalization, and to improve Google generative AI models. Your AI Mode chats can be managed or deleted from AI Mode in Google Search. Sources, notebook instructions, and notebooks can be managed or deleted from AI Mode, Gemini Apps, or Gemini Notebook.
Your Keep Activity settings govern how we save and use the chats you have with your notebook in AI Mode.
Tip: Turning off "Keep Activity" or deleting AI Mode activity does not delete data in Gemini Notebook. Learn more about how Google services retain data.
