Use Gemini Spark to manage your tasks and workflows in Gemini Apps

Gemini Spark is your personal AI agent that can automate complex workflows and manage schedules for ongoing tasks in Gemini Apps. Gemini can help handle tasks, using info from sources like Connected Apps, skills, chats, websites that you're signed in to, Personal Intelligence, location and more. Just tell Gemini your specific goals and when you want the tasks completed.

For example, you can use Spark to:

  • Declutter your inbox: Summarise or archive newsletters and unsubscribe from email lists
  • Get a custom news digest: Go deep on the stories that you care about and follow how they evolve
  • Deep dive on topics: Pull research formatted to fit your goal, complete with cited sources

  • Available wherever Gemini Apps are supported, except in the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
  • Only available in the Gemini mobile app, the Gemini app on Mac and the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com.

Before you use Gemini Spark

​Be careful when you enter info directly in a task thread​

Do not enter sign-in info, payment details or info that you may find sensitive directly into the task thread. If needed, take control of Gemini's browser or the local browser. Then, enter relevant details directly on the web page.

Avoid scheduling tasks that you find sensitive

Gemini is still learning and can make mistakes. To help keep your information safe and prevent unintended actions, avoid tasks or schedules that use information or perform actions that you find sensitive. These tasks may need your supervision and input.

If a schedule runs when you are offline, you may not be able to stop Gemini from completing an unintended action. Some tasks may require your confirmation before Gemini completes them. Learn more about tasks and schedules.

How Spark works with Gemini in Chrome

With Chrome auto browse, you can ask Gemini Spark to complete tasks that involve browsing the web, like shopping, booking travel or making dinner reservations. To work on your tasks, Spark uses your info from sources like Connected Apps, skills, chats, tasks, websites that you’re logged in to, Personal Intelligence, location and more. 

Gemini Spark can browse the web in multiple ways, one of which is by connecting to your own device (aka your local Chrome browser). Currently, only Gemini Spark in desktop Chrome can use auto browse. It might also use a remote browser (which is a separate, new browser instance, not your local browser in the cloud). 

If you use your local browser: Gemini Spark has access to all the same sites that you do, including sites that you're signed in to. When acting on your behalf, Gemini Spark will share necessary info with third parties. This could include your name, contact information, files, preferences and info that you might find sensitive. With your permission, it can also use login info that you saved in Password Manager to sign in to loyalty programmes and online accounts. 

To use Spark via your local browser, you'll need to keep your device and Google Chrome awake and running. If you later close or turn off your device before the task is finished, or the device isn't available, Spark might use a remote browser to complete the task.

If you use the remote browser: Your task can continue even if you close your device. Note that at some stages – like when a website asks you to sign in – the task will stop until you take over and do it yourself.

Notes:

  • The first time that Gemini Spark needs to browse the web for you on this device, Chrome will ask you for permission to connect Chrome to Spark.
  • After that, for every task that involves web browsing, Spark will ask for confirmation first.
  • You can turn off Gemini Spark's ability to auto browse on a device. Click More  and then Settings and then AI innovations and then Gemini in Chrome.

Keep track of tasks

If Gemini Spark is busy using auto browse for a task, you'll see it in your Recent tasks. At any time, you can stop Gemini from web browsing. In the Gemini in Chrome side panel, click Stop [icon]. If you do, Gemini tries to figure out the next steps to continue your task. This may involve use of the remote browser to web browse or activation of a different tool. Or it could mean that Gemini abandons the task. 


If you want to completely cancel a task yourself, in the Gemini Spark text box, click Stop .

You can get help with setting up your first skills and tasks in Gemini Spark conversationally. Just enter 'set up', 'get started' or 'interview me' in a Gemini Spark task.

Create a task

In the Gemini web app
  1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
  2. On the sidebar, click Switch to Spark .
  3. In the text box, describe the task that you want Gemini to manage.
  4. To add files to your task, click Upload and tools , then one of the following options:
    • Upload files
    • Add from Drive
    • Add Notebook Notebook
  5. Click Submit .
  6. Monitor your task regularly for any input that Gemini may need from you. For example, if Gemini needs you to perform certain actions in its browser, it asks you to take over the task.
In the Gemini app on Mac
  1. On your Mac, open Gemini .
  2. On the sidebar, click Spark and then Tasks .
  3. In the text box, describe the task that you want Gemini to manage.
  4. To add files to your task, click Upload and tools , then one of the following options:
    • Upload files
    • Add from Drive
    • Add Notebook Notebook
  5. Click Submit .
  6. Monitor your task regularly for any input that Gemini may need from you. For example, if Gemini needs you to perform certain actions in its browser, it asks you to take over the task.

Monitor a task and check its progress

To check and manage a task, including any associated permissions and schedules, open the task thread and its work panel.

Step 1: Open the task thread and its work panel

In the Gemini web app
  1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
  2. On the sidebar, click Switch to Spark and then Tasks .
  3. Click the thread for the task that you want to check or manage.
  4. To give Gemini more instructions or change them, tell Gemini in the task thread.
  5. To show this task thread's work panel, on the left edge of the thread panel, click Close tasks panel .

Tip: For a quick view of a task thread's work panel, at the top of the thread, click the progress chip.

In the Gemini app on Mac
  1. On your Mac, open the Gemini app .
  2. On the sidebar, click Spark and then Tasks .
  3. Click the thread for the task that you want to check or manage.
  4. To give Gemini more instructions or change them, tell Gemini in the task thread.
  5. To show this task thread's work panel, on the left edge of the thread panel, click Close tasks panel .

Tip: For a quick view of a task thread's work panel, at the top of the thread, click the progress chip.

Under 'Files', you can review the files that Gemini read or updated for tasks in the thread. You can click a file to open it.
Pause and resume schedules in a thread
  1. Under 'Schedules', hover over the schedule that you want to pause or resume.
  2. To pause a schedule, click More and then Pause .
  3. To resume a schedule, click More and then Resume .

Monitor and take over a task

Gemini can complete some of your tasks in a local or remote browser. For example, it can navigate to a website and interact with the page, such as adding items to your basket. You can take control of the browser at any time. For certain actions, Gemini will ask you to take over the task.

Take over remote browser tasks

  1. Open the task's work panel.
  2. Under 'Skills and apps', click Remote browser. This opens Gemini's browser on a remote computer.
    • When Gemini is browsing the web, there's a remote computer icon at the top of the task thread. You can also click Remote computer to view Gemini’s browser.
  3. Hover over Gemini's browser.
  4. Click Take over task and then Take over task.
  5. Complete your steps.
  6. To give back control to Gemini, at the top, click Go back to Gemini.

Delete remote browser and computer data

Delete local browser data
You can remove data from the Chrome browser on your device at any time. Learn how to delete your local browser data in Chrome.
Delete remote browser data

When Gemini uses the remote browser to complete tasks, browser data such as cookies that contain your website authentication info (your sign-in details) is saved for future sessions for your convenience. You can delete all saved browser data from past sessions at any time. To help protect your privacy, Gemini may automatically delete saved browser data on your behalf, and you may need to sign back in to websites.

  1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
  2. At the bottom, click Settings and help and then Gemini Spark settings Gemini Spark.
  3. Under 'Delete remote browser data', click Delete .
Delete remote code execution data

When Gemini uses a remote computer to run code or perform complex tasks, it saves the data on the remote computer for future sessions for your convenience. You can delete all the data saved on the remote computer at any time in Gemini Spark settings. This will delete all saved remote code execution files and data from previous sessions.

  1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
  2. At the bottom, click Settings and help and then Gemini Spark settings Gemini Spark.
  3. Under 'Delete remote code execution', click Delete .

In the Gemini app on Mac
  1. On your Mac, open the Gemini app .
  2. On the sidebar, click Spark.

Turn off Gemini Spark 

Important: When Gemini Spark is turned off:

  • Your remote browser data and remote code execution data are deleted.
  • Your Chrome browsing data is not erased. Learn how to delete your local browser data in Chrome.
  • Schedules will not run as long as Spark is off or if your device is off.
  • Your tasks, threads, schedules or any related files that Gemini updated or created will not be deleted.
In the Gemini web app
  1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
  2. At the bottom, click Settings and help and then Gemini Spark settings Gemini Spark.
  3. Under 'Turn off Gemini Spark', click Turn off.
In the Gemini app on Mac
  1. On your Mac, open the Gemini app .
  2. At the top of the screen, click Gemini and then Settings and then  Gemini Spark settings Gemini Spark.
  3. Under 'Turn off Gemini Spark', click Turn off.

Tips:

  • Turning off Spark does not delete any past activity from schedules, tasks, threads or files that Gemini updated or created.
  • Your schedules and tasks are paused and not deleted.
  • Your chats are not deleted but you can manage them at any time in Gemini Apps activity.

To turn Spark back on

In the Gemini web app
  1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
  2. On the sidebar, click Switch to Spark .
  3. Click Use Gemini Spark.
In the Gemini app on Mac
  1. On your Mac, open the Gemini app .
  2. On the sidebar, click Spark.
  3. Click Use Gemini Spark.

Tip: If you turn Gemini Spark back on, Gemini will automatically resume paused tasks and schedules.

Canvas panel for Google Docs

  • In the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com, you can edit Google documents that Gemini Spark creates in the Canvas panel.
  • When Gemini Spark uses Canvas, the 'Create' menu and certain quick edit options in Canvas are not available.

Limits on Gemini Spark tasks

Gemini Apps have compute-based usage limits that determine how much you can interact with Gemini tools and features. These usage limits increase with higher Google AI subscriptions. How much of your usage is consumed by Gemini Spark will depend on how many requests you make using Gemini Spark each day and how complex each request is. If you're close to your limit, Gemini lets you know. Learn more about limits in Gemini Apps.

You can have up to 15 tasks running at a given time. You'll have to wait for tasks to be completed before making another request. Also, a schedule will not run if there are already 15 tasks running.

How Gemini Spark works with you to keep you and your info safe

Gemini Spark is an experimental feature in early development. As we continuously work to improve it, your supervision is important to help prevent unintended and potentially harmful actions.

About possible risks of using agentic AI

Agentic AI technologies, which power some of the capabilities of Gemini Spark, are helpful and powerful tools but it's important to be aware of some possible risks. Remember that Gemini can make mistakes and do unexpected things.

About prompt injection

Prompt injection is an attempt to elicit an unintended or harmful response from AI tools like Spark. This happens when content such as a website, an email, a document, an .md file or multimedia has malicious instructions or code that might be hidden from you but visible to the AI agent.

If an AI agent reads these instructions while doing a task, it may be misled into doing unintended things. For example, a malicious instruction could tell the agent to:

  • Take your private info from your emails or documents and post it on a public website.
  • Send your emails in Gmail to an external service without you knowing.
  • Expose insights about you based on your data in connected apps.
  • Run a command that can be malicious or install compromised software to achieve persistent data exfiltration through arbitrary code execution. To help protect against this, you can delete your remote browser data and clear your code execution history and files in your Gemini Spark settings.

Gemini can share your info with websites

When you use Spark, Gemini can share information from your chat and other available sources, like your Connected Apps and Personal Intelligence, with websites while using the local or remote browser. This could include your name, contact info, files, preferences and info that you might find sensitive. This can create privacy risks, for example when Spark uses connected apps like Google Workspace which allow Gemini to access your private info. Gemini can choose sites to visit to fulfil your request. 

Gemini has access to your local browsing state

When using the local browser Chrome, Gemini Spark has access to the same sites that you do, including sites that you're signed in to. 

How Spark helps you keep your info safe 
To help reduce possible risks associated with the use of AI agents, Gemini Spark includes features designed to support safer use and mitigate the likelihood of unintended or potentially harmful actions. While these do not guarantee protection against all risks, these features include:
  • Prompts for user confirmation: Gemini is designed to ask for your review and confirmation before it completes certain actions, such as:
    • Sending communications, modifying your data, making purchases and submitting web forms.
    • Before starting a browser task, Gemini will choose which sites to use to complete the task, and it may share your personal info with those sites.
      • Review the plan that Gemini in Chrome will use. Check that it understood your prompt, the page context and your personal info correctly. 
  • Prohibited task recognition: Gemini has safeguards designed to help it recognise and not act on certain types of requests that could be harmful or are outside of its intended purpose, including certain tasks that may violate the Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy.
  • 'Take control' mode: Gemini may pause and ask you to 'take control' of the browser to complete specific actions, including entering specific types of information (such as passwords or payment details).
  • Planning info: Gemini is designed to show you what it's planning to do after you submit a prompt, its progress as it works on your task and any relevant skills, Connected Apps and files used or created.  
  • Site and action restrictions: Spark restricts its browsing activity to the websites and actions relevant to your task. This helps protect your data on other unrelated sites and helps prevent actions that don't align with your task. These are just some ways that we protect against prompt injection.
Why your supervision is important and how to stop Gemini

Gemini's safeguards for Spark described above don't guarantee protection against all risks.

Supervise important and sensitive tasks

Your active supervision is the most important way to protect against risk while using Spark. Review confirmation requests and clarifying questions closely. Use Spark carefully and safely, and only give Spark tasks that you're comfortable with. Be extra watchful when Gemini:
  • Handles an important task
  • Is signed in to websites with sensitive access or info that you find sensitive
  • Does anything where a mistake could be a problem
  • Uses connected apps, like Google Workspace
  • Requires sharing data that you consider sensitive.

You're in control

If Gemini is doing something that you don't like, you can stop it by selecting a Stop response   in the chat or Take control over Gemini's browser. Gemini's safeguards aren't intended to replace your active supervision. You can also help keep your info safe by deleting your local or remote browser data and remote computer data after sensitive sessions. 

Common questions

What's the difference between a task, schedule and skill?

To help you get the most out of Spark tasks, it's helpful to understand the three building blocks that power its logic: tasks, schedules and skills. Think of these as the what, when and how.

A task is your high-level goal. It represents a complete project or objective that you want Gemini Spark to manage for you.

  • Example: 'Plan and manage my business trip to London.'

A schedule lets you hand over tasks to Gemini Spark so that they run automatically in the background. You tell Gemini what to do and when to do it. Tasks can be scheduled to run at a specific date and time or in response to an event.

  • Example: 'Every day at 8.00 am (condition), give me an update on AI news (task)'
  • Example: 'When my flight is delayed (condition), notify me and propose an update to my itinerary (task)'

Tip: Schedules in Gemini Spark are different from scheduled actions in Gemini chat. Learn how to schedule actions in Gemini Apps.

A skill is a set of reusable instructions and additional context. It teaches Gemini how to do a specific task and what tools to use. You can specify the skill that Gemini Spark should use for a task or a schedule's action. Spark can also automatically use a skill when it's relevant to a task.

  • Example: Using a 'Travel booking' skill and a 'Gmail writing' skill simultaneously to rebook a room and send a confirmation.

In summary, you define the task (what you want), set the schedules (when it should happen) and provide the skills (how to do it) to complete the work.

What happens if I downgrade or cancel my Google AI Ultra subscription?

If you choose to downgrade or cancel your Google AI Ultra subscription, you will lose access to Gemini Spark, tasks, schedules and skills. Your data is retained but some features are paused or disabled:

  • In-progress Spark tasks will finish, but are not deleted.
  • Schedules will be paused, but not deleted.
  • Skills are turned off, but not deleted.

What Workspace actions can Gemini Spark perform?

Important:

  • For Spark to connect with your data in Google Workspace services, Google Workspace needs to be connected to Gemini Apps. Learn how to use and manage Connected Apps in Gemini.
  • To undo Gemini Spark's action, click the link in Spark's confirmation and make your changes in the Workspace service.
Gemini Spark can take the following actions in Workspace:

Calendar

  • Manage your schedule: Check your calendar, RSVP to invitations and schedule new events.
  • Reschedule and clean up: Update meeting times, change locations or cancel events.
  • Smart scheduling: Check your calendar and suggest open slots that fit everyone's availability.

Gmail

  • Search and summarise emails: Search across your email threads to find specific topics or summarise conversations.
  • Draft and reply: Compose email drafts, forward emails or reply to existing email threads.
  • Use labels: Organise your inbox with labels.

Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive

Important: To edit shared documents, spreadsheets and presentations, you'll need to review and confirm Gemini Spark's planned edits.

  • Search and manage your Google Drive files: Search for files, read file contents, rename or delete files, check metadata and view recent documents.
  • Write and edit documents: Create documents in Google Docs or edit existing ones – adding summaries, notes or editing specific sections.
  • Read comments: Read comments in Google documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
  • Create and edit spreadsheets: Build, format and edit custom spreadsheets in Google Sheets with data, tables and formulas.
  • Generate and edit presentations: Create presentations in Google Slides from a prompt, and edit, add and remove slides in a presentation.
  • Add images to documents and presentations: Add an image to your prompt and ask Gemini to add it to a document or presentation.

Google Tasks

Important: Gemini can perform bulk actions on private tasks in Google Tasks without your confirmation. Please review your request before you submit or manage directly in Google Tasks.
