When Gemini Notebook is connected to Gemini Apps, you can use notebooks to organise your projects in a dedicated, focused space. Notebooks provide a continuous chat experience that remembers your sources, instructions and ongoing discussions.
You can use notebooks to do things like:
- Plan a trip or holiday
- Apply for a job
- Learn a new hobby or skill
- Create a business plan
- Prepare for an exam
Important: You can create and edit notebooks in both Gemini Apps and Gemini Notebook. Any changes to your notebooks automatically sync between them. Learn more about Gemini Notebook.
What you need
To use notebooks in Gemini Apps, you must:
- Sign in to Gemini Apps with a personal Google Account. For now, this feature isn’t available if you sign in with a work or school Google Account. Learn how to sign in to Gemini Apps.
- Have Gemini Notebook connected to Gemini Apps. Gemini Notebook is designed to work automatically with Gemini Apps in most regions. In the European Economic Area, you'll need to connect it manually. Learn how to connect it.
Important:
- For now, the Gemini Notebook connected app and notebooks are only available in the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com and the Gemini mobile app.
- We're gradually making this feature available, so it might not be available to you just yet.
- You can also use notebooks in the Gemini app on Mac, even though the Gemini Notebook connected app isn't available there yet.
Some features in notebooks require Keep activity turned on. When Keep activity is off, you can still chat with your notebook, but the following features aren't available:
- Auto-saving chats. Gemini cannot save new chats in your notebook.
- Notebook memory. Gemini cannot access or use past chats in a notebook when it responds, even if chats were saved while Keep activity was on.
- Adding existing chats. You cannot add existing chats to a notebook directly from the sidebar.
- Even with Keep activity on, Gemini cannot add chats to notebooks using the Gemini notebook connected app.
- Google Drive. You cannot add files from Google Drive as sources.
- Study notebooks. You cannot create or access existing study notebooks.
- Business notebooks. You cannot create or access existing business notebooks.
Connect Gemini Notebook to Gemini Apps
- In a chat or task thread, ask Gemini to perform an action with notebooks, like creating a notebook.

- If Gemini Notebook isn't connected, you'll get the option to connect it.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Tip: You can also connect or disconnect Gemini Notebook at any time in your Connected Apps settings.
What Gemini can do in a chat or task thread
When you connect Gemini Notebook to Gemini Apps, you can ask Gemini to help manage your notebooks in a chat or task thread. For example, you can ask Gemini to:
- Create, edit or delete a notebook
- Add, update or delete sources in a notebook
- List notebooks and their sources
- Answer questions about a notebook
Tip: Shared notebooks aren't listed in Gemini Apps, but Gemini can link to them in its response. These links open in a new tab within the Gemini Notebook app.
Create a notebook
- On your computer, go to gemini.google.com or open the Gemini app on Mac
.
- At the top, click Open sidebar
under 'Notebooks', New notebook.
- Give your new notebook a name. This name helps you organise your notebooks and also helps you find them.
- Enter a prompt to start your notebook.
- To add files for Gemini to reference in this notebook, click Add sources.
Tips:
- Based on your Google AI plan, you can add up to 600 sources. Learn about Gemini notebook limits.
- Notebooks can't use an existing notebook as a source.
Chat with your notebook
You can chat continuously with your notebook. Gemini remembers the context of your sources and instructions during this chat experience. Your chats in Gemini Apps notebooks can include web searches and use of any Gemini tools.
Study notebooks
Important: Study notebooks are only available when Keep activity is on.
Study notebooks let you upload notes or study materials to create personalised, interactive lessons. Features include:
- Diagnostic quizzes: Take quizzes to identify knowledge gaps and strengths.
- Personalised lessons: Gemini builds bite-sized, interactive lessons based on quiz results and learning goals.
- Progress tracking: Lessons and recommendations automatically update as you complete activities and track your proficiency.
Tip: Study notebooks can be used to create flashcards and infographics from your course materials.
Create a study notebook
Important: Study notebooks are currently available at gemini.google.com but not in the Gemini app on Mac.
- On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
- At the top, click Open sidebar
under 'Notebooks', New notebook.
- Click Study and learn.
- In the conversation to set up your study notebook, tell Gemini what your learning goal is. You can say things like:
- Help me prep for the ACT (A-Levels, JEE, etc.)
- Help me study for my calculus exam
- Add additional details to customise your notebook.
- To add study materials like notes from your device or Google Drive, click Add files

Tips:
- Your lessons, conversations, quizzes and tests, and uploaded sources can all be found in your study notebook. Learn how to find and manage your notebooks in Gemini Apps.
- You can't edit the goal of a study notebook. If you want to focus on a new goal, create a new notebook
Create a business notebook
Important: Business notebooks are only available when Keep activity is on.

You can customise, organise and adjust settings for your notebooks.
Add an existing chat to a notebookImportant: This feature is only available when Keep activity is on.
In the Gemini web app
- On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
- At the top, click Open sidebar

- Find the chat that you want to add to a notebook.
- Next to the chat, click More

- Select the notebook that you want to add the chat to.

- On your computer, open the Gemini app on Mac

- Right-click the chat that you want to add to a notebook.
- Select Add to notebook

- On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.

- Next to the notebook that you want to rename, click More
Rename

- Enter the new name.
- To change the emoji, click the current emoji and select a new one.
- Click Save.
In the Gemini app on Mac
- On your computer, open the Gemini app on Mac

- Right-click the notebook that you want to rename.
- Select Rename

- Enter the new name.
- Click Save.

You can pin your frequently used notebooks for easy access. Your pinned notebooks appear at the top of your list of notebooks in Gemini Apps.

Important: If you delete a notebook, any sources or chats that you added to that notebook will also be deleted.

Fix a problem
I disconnected Gemini Notebook but my notebooks still show in the Gemini mobile app.If you disconnect Gemini Notebook in your Connected Apps settings, but still find notebooks in the Gemini mobile app sidebar, update your Gemini mobile app to the latest version.

You can add different types of information to your notebook to provide Gemini Apps with deep context.

- Files from your device: PDFs, documents, spreadsheets, images, audio, text files, files and .md files.
